#10 Luke Barr (2021) Announces Verbal Commitment to Indiana

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Luke Barr from Papillion, Nebraska has made a verbal commitment to Indiana University for 2021-22. The two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American swims for Papillion-La Vista Senior High School and Sarpy County Swim Club and is our #10-ranked member of the high school class of 2021, as seen in our Way Too Early listing of recruits.

“I am extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to Indiana University! This was the biggest decision of my life. I have learned a lot and met a lot of great people during the recruiting process. I would like to give a huge thanks to my parents, who also happen to be my coaches. I am looking forward to working with the incredible coaching staff at Indiana!”

Barr won all four of his events at the 2019 Nebraska State High School Championship: 200 medley relay (24.37 breaststroke split), 200 IM (1:47.91), 200 free relay (20.17), and 100 breast (55.17). In club swimming, he had a strong long-course season which culminated in an Olympic Trials cut in the 100 back at Speedo Junior Nationals. There, he finished 6th in the 100 back (56.53) and 14th in the 100 breast (1:03.49). He also competed in the 50/100 free and 200 IM and earned PBs in the 100m free, 100m back, 100m breast, and 200m IM, dropping significant time across the board. He took 1.6 seconds off his previous time in the 200 IM to go 2:06.63 and improved by 2.2 in the 100 back (56.53), 4.8 in the 100 free (51.68), and 1.5 in the 100 breast (1:03.44).

Barr has incredible versatility. Beyond his OT qualification in the 100 back he has Winter U.S. Open cuts in the 50/100 free, 100/200 breast, and 200 IM and a Summer Juniors cut in the 100 fly. In SCY, Barr has improved in all his events over the last year. Notably he dropped 4 seconds in the 100 breast, 7 in the 200 breast and 3.4 in the 200 IM.

Best SCY times:

  • 200 IM – 1:47.91
  • 50 free – 20.17
  • 100 free – 44.72
  • 100 breast – 54.50
  • 200 breast – 1:59.18
  • 100 fly – 50.51

The Hoosiers have also received verbal commitments from Henry Bethel and Joshua Matheny for the class of 2025. Given that Matheny is 2021’s top 100/200 breaststroker, Indiana might develop Barr into more of a sprint freestyler. In any case, Barr will be an immediate impact player with the ability to score in any number of events for the Hoosiers.
