Swim practice can be fun, but typically it is boring and exhausting. Most days, we’re just mindlessly trotting down the lanes. So what type of things do we do, and think, during practice? Here is a list of the top 10 things a swimmer does or thinks during practice.
10 – Pretend to be a dolphin
It’s no secret that all swimmers want to be whales. So, what’s the second best thing to being a dolphin? Pretending to be a dolphin. You can find every swimmer, at some point, doing some dolphin dives.
9 – Blow Bubble Rings
Blowing the perfect bubble ring is something to be proud of and can set your reputation for years to come.
“Hey, who is that?”
“Dude, that’s Jim. He’s the best bubble ring blower I’ve ever seen.”
8 – Sing Underwater
What else are we supposed to do, make dolphin noises? (Yup.)
7 – Ask ourselves, “Why am I here?”
Ahh, the infamous question. “Why am I here? What am I doing with my life?”
6 – “But Coachhhh”
Usually followed by a long set being revealed on the dry/erase board, you can usually find a swimmer shouting, “BUT COACCHH” right before a hard set or anything else that will cause pain.
5- Pull on the lane line.
If you don’t do this, you’re a liar.
4- Pee in the pool
And we do it without getting out of the pool. No, It’s not a magic trick.
3 – Think about food
“Can we all agree on how good Chipotle sounds right now?” Said one swimmer to the other swimmers.
2 – Attempt to sleep
“Okay so I’ll just close my eyes and open them in about 10 arm strokes” – Every swimmer at some point.
1 – Forget what lap you’re on
Swimmer: “Okay, I’m not going to forget my laps this time
Swimmer: (singing) “…I’ve got a blank space baby, and I’ll write your name”
Swimmer: “Wait, was that a 50 or a 200?”

This is not true!!!
I never pulled on the lane line. Ever. I was the tries-so-hard overachiever, but I didn’t care if anyone else did.
However I was guilty of the passerby-handshake-team-effort-pull on a regular basis.
Butterfly drills… Especially when the entire team, 8-under up to college kids home for the summer, all at a team bonding “practice.”
Also add… Take forever adjusting cap and goggles before getting in to start warmup.
We worked on reverse swimming (what it would look like if you pressed rewind, it’s fun and breaststroke is hilarious), when we could. Bonus if it was on a day when we had our strokes filmed and we could actually rewind it and see if we looked somewhat legit.

you forgot that if its AM practice you probably think about a hot shower more than anything.
Every morning practice warm-up in college I swam for as long as possible with my eyes closed. Luckily I had my own lane or could split. It was also wonderful when we’d get in the water before they turned the lights on. Sleep is a coveted commodity!
“Dude, that’s Jim. He’s the best bubble ring blower I’ve ever seen.”
Not only did I pull on the lane line in backstroke, but over time, I came to believe my own lie about it: That it was actually a good drill because it mimicked how my coaches used to demonstrate pushing water toward your feet at the end of the stroke.
