10-Year Old Winn Aung Breaks Kris Humphries’ NAG Record

In the team’s first long course meet of 2013, Redding Swim Team 10-year old Winn Aung swam a 1:01.21 in the 100 long course meter freestyle.

That’s one of two records from the 1990’s broken in age group action nation-wide this past weekend, but this one is particularly notable. That’s because the old mark of 1:02.39 was broken by over a second, and was held from 1995 by one Kris Humphries.

Humphries is famous in the world of swimming, the broader world of sports as a high-level power forward for the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets, and even outside of that in the world of entertainment for his brief and very public marriage to reality television star Kim Kardashian. One would argue that Humphries is the nationally most well-known National Age Group Record holder outside of Michael Phelps. He still holds the 50 record in 27.71.

As for Aung, this follows up a great winter season where he was 25.5 in the 50 free and 55.7 in the 100 free in short course yards. This time was a five second improvement from his best time at the end of last season. He will age up in late July.

He has swum for the Redding Swim Team since he was 5 years old, though it was almost exclusively yards swimming until last summer (this is a combined summer league/USA Swimming program.)

Aung trains under Mike Hoppe, who said “Performances of this caliber don’t happen by accident.  I have had swimmers ranked first in the Nation, but Winn’s amazing performance is the first National Record I have been a part of.  Winn is a talented, hardworking athlete with a competitive nature.  He has supportive parents who take him and his siblings to multiple training sessions and travel all over for competitions.  Winn is part of a large, established swim team with many positive role models among the coaches and his teammates.  With Winn’s abilities, attitude, and the supportive environment he enjoys, his future looks very bright indeed.”

Aung also swam a 27.75 in the 50 free, which was just .04 off of Humphries’ record as well.

Wonder how many hours training he does per week?

Yes he is tall for his age, but I would assume that Chris Humphries was tall for his age too. And that shouldn’t lessen the accomplishment.

Congratulations to Winn and Coach Hoppe!

Yes, he was. My former coach coached Kris Humphries and he told me that Humphries was about 5’10” when he was breaking these National Age Group Records.

cool who is your coach? I swam with both Kris and Kalea. so we had the same coach i’m thinking. he wasn’t that tall at that age. used to sit in the fin bin at Richfield Pool.

I would say that Tim Duncan is the the most recognizable former NAG record holder. Unless his times didn’t count since he swam for the Virgin Island?

Might as well put in Kiki VanDeweghe with many records even at 12 and 13, Mike Schmidt was a good one in Ohio, they say Jim Brown was intramural champ at Syracuse and that Kereem Abdul Jabbar could swim a mean 40 in old NYC 20 yd pools.
