Hurricane Swim Club’s Eric Ring had an incredible showing last weekend at the Louisiana 14 & Under Age Group SC State Championships in Baton Rouge, claiming a trio of wins with some blistering times in the boys’ freestyle events.

Ring, 13, had his top performance come in the 1000 free, where he clocked a time of 9:35.39 to become the 15th-fastest 13-year-old in history. This was only Ring’s second time swimming the event, having gone 10:28.14 one year earlier to the day.

In the 500 free, Ring dropped over eight seconds to win in a time of 4:39.53, ranking 24th all-time among 13-year-olds as he lowers his previous best of 4:47.83 set last month. He entered 2022 with a PB of 4:54.31, done in November 2021.

His third individual win came in the 200 free, where Ring swam the 56th-fastest time in 13-year-old history at 1:44.63. Prior to his prelim swim (1:45.55), his best time had stood at 1:47.12 from the Ralph Crocker Classic in January.

Ring added runner-up finishes in the boys’ 13-14 50 free (22.55) and 100 free (48.81), with 14-year-old Hyland Authement of Swimpac claiming both with respective best times of 21.55 and 47.90.

On the girls’ side, some youngsters had impressive swims in the form of Avery Daigle and Jemia Thomas.

Daige, an 11-year-old from the Franco’s Fins, won the girls’ 11-12 50 fly (27.22) and 200 free (2:04.63), and also had a strong 50 back swim (29.49) to take second. Daigle’s 50 fly ranks fifth in 2021-22 among 11-year-olds.

Thomas, a 12-year-old out of Crawfish Aquatics, was the 50 back winner in 28.02. That time ties for the 15th-fastest among 11-12s this season.

I’d also like to point out that Hyland Authement broke the 50 freestyle record. The only record broken at the meet.
