13-Year-Old Madison Mintenko Drops 1:47 200 Yard Free at St. George Sectional

2021 SPEEDO SECTIONALS – ST. GEORGE

  • April 22-25, 2021
  • Dixie State University Human Performance Center Pool
  • Short Course Yards (SCY)
  • Results on MeetMobile: “2021 Speedo Sectionals – St George UT”

Day 2 of the Sectionals meet in St. George, Utah continued with the 200 free, 100 back, and 400IM. 13-year-old Madison Mintenko of Pikes Peak Athletics highlighted the session, posting the #33 all-time fastest 200 freestyle in her age group with a time of 1:47.51.

Mintenko took .19 seconds off her adjusted lifetime best 200 freestyle time from two weeks ago. Pikes Peak is based out of Colorado Springs which has an elevation of about 6000 feet, double the minimum altitude that USA Swimming gives altitude time adjustments for.

Her unadjusted best time was 1:48.90, but the altitude of the Dixie State pool does not meet the minimum elevation of 3000 feet to garner time adjustments. Therefore, her adjusted best time is a more accurate comparison here.

Alto Swim Club’s Michael Lincoln, a senior at Brown, posted a 1:35.85 in the 200 freestyle, within .8 of his lifetime best time from the 2020 Ivy League Championships where he placed 3rd. He beat his teammate Austin Sparrow, a UCSB commit who finished in 2nd place, by about 1.7 seconds. Sparrow’s best swim came in the prelims session, though, where he swam a 1:38.15 and took about 1.3 seconds off his lifetime best from December 2020.

Less than an hour later, Lincoln blasted a 3:56.03 in the 400 IM to touch the wall in 1st place. He won the race handily but was about 1.5 seconds off his lifetime best time from February 2017. Lake Oswego Swim Club’s Owen Ngan and Olympus Aquatic’s Evan VanBrocklin joined him under the 4-minute mark, touching the wall at 3:58.17 and 3:59.60, respectively.

After securing an Olympic qualifying time during Thursday’s time trials session in the 100 meter back,  Quintin McCarty of Pikes Peak Athletics won the 100 yard back with a time of 47.40. The NC State commit took .35 off his lifetime best from December 2020.

Second-place finisher William Oates of King Aquatic Club also joined McCarty under the 48-second mark, touching the wall at 47.97 and crushing his best time from 2020 by just over one second.

The fastest time in the women’s 100 back came from May Peterson of Spokane Waves Aquatics Team who touched the wall in 1st place with a time of 53.84. 16-year-old Peterson nearly matched the lifetime best swim she had during prelims, a time of 53.73 that undercut her previous best from last month by 1.5 seconds.

She had a close race in finals with Boulder Swimming’s Jenna Reznicek, a Brown commit, who finished in 2nd place (53.91) and Utah Valley Aquatics’ Brynn Sproul, a BYU junior, who claimed 3rd place (54.00).

King Aquatic Club’s Camden Doane dominated the women’s 400 IM, claiming victory with a 6 second lead over the field. 15-year-old Doane touched the wall with a time of 4:17.23, about 6 seconds faster than her previous lifetime best time from a month and a half ago.

Other Notable Swims:

  • 14-year-old Ben Madson of Velocity Swimming posted a 51.41 in the 100 back, ranking himself just outside the top 100 all-time fastest 13-14-year-olds in the event.
