13-Year Old Sophie Smith Smashes National Age Record on Day 1 of Scottish Age Group Champs

The Scottish National Age Groups Swimming Championships kicked off this evening at the Aberdeen Aquatics Centre with Heat Declared Winners being crowned for the girls 1500m and the boys 800m freestyle events.

Arbroath St. Thomas swimmer, Sophie Smith, smashed the 13 years age group record by almost six seconds, taking gold in 17:36.99.

Young Iona MacLeod of Dundee City Aquatics, started her National Age Groups campaign well securing gold in the 11 years age group category with a time of 18:54.45.

In the 800m freestyle, Stephen Milne (Perth City) swam a good, controlled race taking victory in the 17 years and older category in 8:04.72. Milne, the Commonwealth Games silver medallist in 4.200freestyle, looked in good shape ahead of the British Championships in London, which are less than two weeks away.

Sean Craigmile, East Lothian Swim Team – 9:59.55

Boys 13 years 800m freestyle:

Keir Buchanan, South Lanarkshire – 9:22.71

Boys 14 years 800m freestyle:

Daniel Ferguson, West Lothian – 9:10.57

Boys 15 years 800m freestyle:

Duncan McKinney, City of Glasgow Swim Team – 9:10.63

Boys 16 years 800m freestyle:

Scott McLay, Perth City – 8:44.05

Boys 17 years & over 800m freestyle:

Stephen Milne, Perth City – 8:04.72
