4 Points Separate UConn and William & Mary at Bucknell Invite

After Day 2 at the Bucknell Invite, UConn has overtaken William and Mary by a narrow 4 points on the women’s side, 854 to 850. William & Mary has jumped into the lead for the men’s meet ahead of Buffalo. Full results can be found here.

Bucknell:

Men-

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Chris Devlin placed in the top 10 in three events Saturday at the Bucknell Invitational, leading the Bison to a fourth-place standing after two days of competition. The event wraps up on Sunday.

Devlin took fifth in the 100 back, seventh in the 400 IM and was on the 200 medley relay team that finished seventh. He holds the program record in both individual events and was on the team that owns the second-fastest time in the relay.

Devlin was joined on the 200 medley relay team by junior Sam Mackie, sophomore Triston Loux and senior Steve Grune. The group finished in 1:33.40.

Junior Louis Behnen was three spots ahead of Devlin in the 400 IM, taking fourth with a time of 4:00.13. He owns the program’s third-fastest time in the event.

Behnen also helped the 800 free relay team to a fourth-place finish. He was joined by junior Jack Robinson, sophomore Sam Rutan and junior Denver Freeman. The Bison finished in 6:49.90.

Rounding out the top-10 finishers for the Bison on the day was Robinson in the 200 free. He took sixth in the event with a time of 1:41.37, after qualifying for the finals with a time of 1:41.11 in the prelims.

Bucknell was fourth after one day of competition and remained in that spot in the nine-team field after the second day. William & Mary leads with 1,028 points, while Buffalo is second with 927.5 Connecticut is in third with 654 points, one spot ahead of the Bison who have 519.5. La Salle (442), Georgetown (359), Binghamton (296), Fordham (255) and Delaware (17) round out the field.

Competition resumes with the 200 back at 10 a.m. on Sunday. The finals will begin at 5 p.m.

Women-

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women’s swimming and diving team recorded five new program top-10 marks while competing in the second day of the Bucknell Invitational on Saturday at Kinney Natatorium. Competition at the event wraps up on Sunday.

Senior Emma Levendoski was Bucknell’s top finisher on the day. She won the 100 back in 53.68, besting second-place Sophi Rittenhouse (William & Mary), who finished in 54.14. Levendoski’s teammate, Rachel Perry, took fifth with a time of 56.24, but finished in 56.06 during the preliminary round.

The Bison have set 10 new top-10 marks through two days of the Bucknell Invitational, including a new school record in the 400 medley relay on Friday. On Saturday, one of the swimmers on that record-breaking relay, freshman Abigail Rosenberg, helped the 800 free relay team finish with the third-fastest time in school history. She teamed with sophomore Dani Potis, freshman Brittany Bishop and freshman Lindsay Smalec to take fourth in the event with a time of 7:30.79. They will need to drop three seconds if they want to take over second and six seconds if they want to break the record later this season.

Rosenberg wasn’t finished with the 800 free relay. She also helped the 200 medley relay team post a top-10, teaming with Levendoski, junior Diana Hanson and sophomore Julianna Foss to record the eighth-fastest time in program history. The group took fifth on the day, finishing in 1:44.14.

Bucknell had a pair of top-10 finishers in two other events. Potis was third in the 200 free, while Bishop took ninth in the event. Bishop touched the wall in 1:51.20, good enough for fifth all-time at Bucknell. In the 400 IM, Hanson was sixth and junior Caroline Orem was eighth. Hanson already owned the sixth-best time in school history, but improved it with a 4:25.26. She added an eighth-place finish in the 100 breast on the day.

Representing the Bucknell divers, Lara Curtis was 10th with a score of 211.10, while Tally Fordwas right behind her in 11th with 211.00 points.

In the 100 fly, Smalec tied Kristen Purdy for sixth on Bucknell’s list, touching the wall in 56.62.

Bucknell is in fifth place out of nine in the team standings. Connecticut leads with 854 points, while William & Mary is close behind with 850. Buffalo (724), Fordham (631.5) and the Bison (610.5) round out the top five.

Competition resumes with the 200 back at 10 a.m. on Sunday. The finals will begin at 5 p.m.

William & Mary:

Women-

The William & Mary women’s swimming picked up two wins and a school record Saturday at the Bucknell Invitational, and put a tremendous scare into a conference record as well en route to a second-place standing in the clubhouse.  With both diving events already accounted for, Connecticut holds a slim four-point lead on the Tribe, 854-850, with Buffalo a distant third with 724 points.

100 Back
In the 100 backstroke, it was defending CAA Champion Sophie Rittenhouse (London, England)who came through for the win in 54.14 seconds, breaking her own school record in the process.  Rittenhouse’s time was also an NCAA provisional qualifier, and was just .01 off of the CAA conference record set back in 2011.  Her prelim time of 55.55 seconds was also impressive, ranking as the 13th-fastest race in school history.

Senior Noelle Klockner (Marlboro, N.J.) swam 56.98 seconds to finish 12th int he event, and sophomore Shannon Harrington (Philadelphia, Pa.) set a pair of lifetime-bests, finishing up with a 57.49 finals time for 13th overall.  Freshman Katie Sell (Fredericksburg, Va.) swam a personal-best 56.90 in the morning prelims to improve to a tie for 11th all-time among Tribe athletes, then came back to take 14th in finals at 57.74 seconds.  Emma Merrill (Fairfax, Va.) was just behind in 57.92 for 15th place, and sophomore Kitty Arenz (Greenwich, Conn.) won the “C” finals in 57.20 seconds.

200 Medley Relay
Rittenhouse was also part of W&M’s relay win on the night, leading-off the 200 medley that won in 1:42.16, the fifth-fastest time in school history.  After Rittenhouse’s leg, the charge passed to Annie Valls (Miami, Fla.), Jessie Ustjanauskas (West Hartford, Conn.), and Jaimie Miller (Houston, Texas)in turn.

400 IM
In the 400 IM, freshman Morgan Smith (Verona, N.J.) swam 4:28.36 in the prelims to improve to 10th in school history, then came back in the evening to finish 11th overall in 4:28.40.  SophomoreRachel Anderson (Clifton, Va.) turned in a pair of personal-bests, 4:30.10 in the morning and 4:29.84 in the evening to finish 12th overall.  Her finals time also improves her standing to 12th all-time among Tribe athletes.  Senior Jenny Lomicka (Henrico, Va.) won the bonus finals in 4:30.30, while freshman Brooke Bruno (Media, Pa.) was right behind her in 4:30.64 for 18th overall.  Bruno’s time lifts her onto the W&M all-time lists as the 14th-fastest swimmer in school history.  Merrill jumped in the pool in this event as well, finishing 24th overall in 4:37.65.

100 Fly
Ustjanauskas was the top Tribe entrant in the 100 fly, where she finished second overall in 54.74 seconds.  That was the 12th-fastest time ever for a Tribe swimmer.  Junior Georgie Crompton(Brooklandville, Md.) was fifth overall in 55.46 seconds, and sophomore Abby Mack (Wayne, Pa.)finished 10th overall in 55.95 seconds.  Sell swam another terrific set of races, taking 15th overall in 57.15 seconds after swimming a personal-best 56.19 in the morning prelims.  That ranks the freshman 10th all-time among Tribe athletes, just ahead of Anderson who had a pair of lifetime-bests.  Anderson swam 56.58 seconds in the prelims, than improved to 56.43 seconds in the finals to finish 13th overall.

200 Free
Miller led the way in the 200 free at 1:51.09, finishing fifth overall.  Junior Selina Fuller (Henrico, Va.) swam a lifetime-best 1:50.26 in the prelims, improving to seventh all-time in school history, before taking eighth in the finals at 1:52.29.  The freshman Smith finished 21st overall in “C” finals, with a time of 1:54 flat.

100 Breast
The Tribe put two women on the podium in the 100 breast, after both earned an unlikely tie for second place.  Valls was one, and Allie Christy (Williamsburg, Va.) the other as both touched the wall in 1:03.74 seconds, the 10th-best time in school history.  Valls had earlier timed 1:03.67 in the prelims, which is the eighth-fastest single race in school history.  Freshman Claire Williams (Apex, N.C.) was seventh in the finals at 1:04.97, and moved up to 10th all-time among W&M athletes after her preliminary swim of 1:04.47.  Lomicka won her second race of the evening by taking the consolation finals in another 1:04.97 clocking for ninth overall, and senior Courtney Mizerak(Manassas, Va.) was 18th overall in the “C” finals at 1:06.13.

800 Free Relay
The final race of the night saw another bronze fall to the Green and Gold, as the 800 free relay team of Miller, Ustjanauskas, freshman Maria Oceguera (New Rochelle, N.Y.), and Fuller combined to take third overall in 7:26.98.  That was the seventh-fastest time ever swum by the Tribe.

The Bucknell Invitational concludes on Sunday with six events, the 100 free, 1650 free, the 200s of each stroke, and the 400 free relay.

Men-

The William & Mary men’s swimming team put on an impressive show Saturday at the Bucknell Invitational, winning five of the seven events to climb back on top of the team standings with 1,028 points.  Buffalo is second overall at 927.5, but that gap can close in a hurry with one more diving event still to come (Buffalo scored 130 in the first diving event).  Connecticut is a distant third, with 654 points.

200 Medley Relay
The Tribe’s winning began in the 200 medley relay, a traditional strength of the program.  SeniorsWill Manion (Haddonfield, N.J.), Jeremiah O’Donnell (Chapel Hill, N.C.), Justin Barden(Gordonsville, Va.), and Billy Russell (Newport News, Va.) combined to win in 1:29.91, the fourth-fastest time in school history.

400 IM
O’Donnell was back in action right away, taking third in the 400 IM with a time of 3:58.73.  Sophomore Brett Barden (Henrico, Va.) timed 4:01.00 for sixth in the finals, after swimming 3:59.69 in the morning prelims.  Classmate Conrad Zamparello (Midlothian, Va.) won the consolation finals in 4:00.25, and freshman Maicoll Gomez (Richmond, Va.) cut four seconds from prelims to take 10th in 4:03.34.  That improved him to 10th all-time in school history.  FreshmanEric Grimes (Louisville, Ky.) swam in the “C” finals, taking 19th overall in 4:04.94.

100 Fly
In the 100 fly, it was sophomore Evan Baker (Chantilly, Va.) who came through with the win in 48.46 seconds.  That was the sixth-fastest time in school history, and Baker’s prelim time of 48.75 seconds is the ninth-best race ever at W&M.  Sophomore Tommy Kealy (Wilton, Conn.) joined him on the podium in third place at 49.51 seconds, after swimming a lifetime-best 49.42 in the prelims to rank sixth all-time among Tribe athletes.  Also in the championship finals was the senior Justin Barden, who touched in 49.59 seconds for fifth place, and junior Alex Montes de Oca (Orange, Va.), seventh in 49.87 seconds.

200 Free
Russell kept the winning going in the 200 free, as he defended his top seed from prelims with a 1:39.51 gold-medal performance.  Junior Joe Eiden (White Plains, N.Y.) was right behind him in a lifetime-best 1:39.64 to claim the silver, and improve to ninth on the Tribe’s all-athlete list.  SeniorRyan Natal (Great Falls, Va.) took 10th overall in 1:41.53, and Alex Henderson (Hopewell, Va.) was right behind him in 1:42.09 for 11th place.  Grimes swam his second final of the night in 1:42.87 for 14th place while Kyle Neri (Wallingford, Conn.) touched the wall in 1:42.92 to take 15th overall.  In the bonus heat, freshman Joey Rento (Newport News, Va.) claimed 20th with his time of 1:43.40.

100 Breast
In the 100 breast, O’Donnell continued to add to his bronze medal collection with a 55.85 time.  Senior Andrew Nyce (Vienna, Va.) was eighth overall in 57.08 seconds, and Josh Zimmt(Barrington, R.I.) was 10th in 57.24 seconds.  Freshman Brooks Peterson (Carrollton, Va.) stopped the clock in 58.71 seconds for 16th overall, and Brett Barden rounded out the entrants in 59.51 for 22nd place.

100 Back
Manion kept himself undefeated in the backstroke with W&M’s first NCAA qualifier of the year, reaching the wall in 48.47 seconds to mark the 16th-fastest time in school history.  His classmateJustin Barden was eighth in 51.02, while Henderson was 10th in the consolation heat with a lifetime-best 51.01 seconds.  That improved the junior to 11th all-time in school history.  Sophomore Wyatt Grubb (Mechanicsville, Va.) was right behind him in 51.03 seconds for 11th overall, and Montes de Oca swam 51.57 to claim the 14th spot.  Gomez finished his night with a 16th-place 52.01 performance, and senior Austin Glass (Mechanicsville, Va.) was 18th in the bonus finals with a time of 51.91 seconds.

800 Free Relay
The final event of the night was the 800 free relay, where the Tribe has led the CAA for the last five years.  Eiden led the squad before giving way to Natal, who came into the wall down by just over a second to the team from Connecticut.  That proved no problems for Manion and Russell on the back end, who each swam 1:39 legs to blow past the Huskies and win in 6:40.87, three seconds ahead of the field.  That was the sixth-fastest time in school history.

The Bucknell Invitational finishes Sunday, with seven events on the docket including the 50 free, 200s of strokes, 1650 free, 1-meter diving, and the 400 free relay.

Fordham:

Day two of the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania is in the books, and the Fordham swimming & diving teams had another big day in the pool, as the Rams remained in fourth place in the women’s competition and eighth in the men’s.

For the second straight day, the Rams had event winners and season-best times, while seeing one school record fall.

Junior Megan Polaha led the way, as she broke her own school record in the 400 individual medley, winning the event in an NCAA “B” cut time of 4:18.91.  Her previous record was 4:19.72.  In addition to the school record, she was also sixth in the 100 butterfly in 55.49 seconds, while joining Megan Gray,Theresa Goehring, and Kalena Laurent in the 800 freestyle relay which took sixth in 7:35.92.

Joining Polaha as an event winner on Saturday were seniors Shannon Lulley and Steve Sholdra.  Like Polaha, Sholdra won the 400 individual medley in a season-best time of 3:54.64, while Lulley took first in the 100 butterfly event in an NCAA “B” cut time of 54.47 seconds.

Lulley and Sholdra were also a part of a scoring relay on Saturday.  Lulley joined Morgan Fairclough,Gabrielle Celia, and Chandler Lulley in the 200 medley relay to take third in a season-best time of 1:43.78, while Sholdra led off the 800 freestyle relay with Chris Viera, Liam Semple, and Thomas Gillespie to place seventh in 6:52.77.

Aside from the trio of event winners, 18 other Rams scored for Fordham on day two.  In the 400 individual medley, Marie Feneron placed third in 4:25.74, while Megan Gehrich (4:30.29) and Jacqueline Dominger (4:31.19) were 13th and 19th respectively.

Gehrich also scored in the 100 breaststroke, taking 23rd in 1:07.81, with Celia taking 11th overall in a season-best time of 1:05.76.

Laurent scored in two events on day two, taking 13th in the 100 butterfly in 56.60 seconds and 12th in the 200 freestyle in a season-best time of 1:53.19.

Fordham also had two scorers in the 100 backstroke, as Fairclough was fourth in a season-best teim of 55.60 seconds, while Chandler Lulley was 22nd in 58.08 seconds.

In the final women’s event, all four Fordham divers scored on the one-meter board, as Wendy Espina-Esquivel placed third in the final with a score of 263.55, while Natalie Wodniak was 15th (180.65),Krista White in 18th (162.55) and Kate McGrath in 21st (134.10).

On the men’s side, Ethan D’Arcangelo scored 23rd in the 400 individual medley in 4:14.25, while Rhett Karapolous and Tommy Christensen were 13th and 20th respectively in 50.70 and 51.12 seconds.

The Rams also had a pair of swimmers score in the 100 backstroke, as Isiah Magsino and Miguel Mattox placed 13th and 19th, respectively in 51.52 and 51.99 seconds.

The Bucknell Invitational concludes on Sunday.

Georgetown:

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Georgetown University swimming & diving team completed the second day of the Bucknell Invitational at Kinney Natatorium on Saturday evening with the women maintaining sixth place in the nine team field with 535.5 points. The men’s team moved up one spot to sixth, earning 359 points through two days.

The Hoya women broke five program records, two during the morning preliminary rounds, during the second day of the meet to give them seven program records through the first 29 events. The men turned in a strong day, moving past Binghamton into sixth place.

Sophomore Molly Fitzpatrick (Manchester, N.H./The Derryfield School) won the women’s 100-yard breaststroke, breaking a Georgetown record with a time of 1:03.49, while winning GU’s first race of the meet in the 20th event.

The Georgetown women would start the second day in strong fashion, as 200-yard medley relay team of junior Katie Duncalf (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley), sophomore Haley Owens (Pierceville, Calif./El Dorado), senior Erica Fabbri (Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) and sophomore Bailey Page (Brentwood, Tenn./Ravenwood) finished fourth and broke a program-record with a time of 1:44.02.

Page went on to break her own school record in the women’s 200-yard freestyle, finishing fourth overall with a time of 1:50.57. Duncalf also broke her own record in the women’s 100-yard backstroke, as she swam for a time of 56.65 during the morning preliminary round. She finished seventh in the ‘A’ final with a time of 57.09 during evening competition.

Freshman Madeleine Loniewski (Redford, Mich./Mercy) set a Georgetown record during the preliminary round of the women’s 400-yard individual medley, finishing in a time of 4:26.54. She went on to finish fifth in the ‘A’ final with a time of 4:27.91.

On the men’s side sophomore Daniel Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) earned an eighth place finish in the ‘A’ final of the men’s 400-yard IM with a time of 4:03.83 to earn points for the Hoyas.

Junior Martin Vanin (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Bolivar) earned a sixth-place finish in the ‘A’ final of the men’s 100-yard butterfly, finishing with a time of 49.74.

Competition at the Bucknell Invitational concludes on Sunday at Kinney Natatorium.

Buffalo:

LEWISBURG, PA – The Bucknell Invite continued on Saturday with preliminaries and finals sessions taking place. UB’s success in the pool and diving well were fueled by four Bulls finishing in the top-eight of the 100 yard men’s breastroke. The women’s team had multiple top-eight finishers throughout Saturday’s events.

Itai De La Vega edged Scott Huang out by .19 seconds to win the 100 yard breastroke in a time of 54.99. The Bulls duo finished first and second, while Luke Otto and Garrett Clarke placed sixth and seventh in the event. The Bulls 200 medley relay team consisting of Jonathan Ekas, Huang, Mason Miller, and Antonio Lanzi finished in second place with a time of 1:30.52, which was an improvement of almost one second over their preliminary time.

Charles Barry and Billy Patrum earned 28 and 25 points, respectively, with their second and fifth-place finishes in the 400 IM. Brittany Walters finished second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:23.36.

Sarah Baxter and Julia Box finished fourth and seventh in the 100 yard butterfly with times of 55.22 and 55.69. The Bulls also had two top-eight finishers in the 200 yard freestyle with Megan Burns finishing second and Jess Powers placing sixth. Box’s impressive performances continued with an eighth-place finish in the 100 yard backstroke. She swam the finals race in a time of 57.19.

Burns anchored the 200 medley relay team that finished in second. Box, Holly Olsen, Baxter, and Burns swam in a time of 1:43.16 and was edged out by William and Mary’s relay team by one second. Baxter, Kerry Giovanniello, Powers, and Burns concluded the second day for the women’s team with a first-place finish in the 800 yard free style relay. The Bulls relay team swam the event in a time of 7:20.90 and six seconds faster than their closest competitors.

In the men’s 800 yard freestyle relay, Buffalo finished third in a time of 6:44.80. UB’s relay team consisted of Lanzi, Martin Leigh, Patrium, and Eric Jensen.

In the diving well the Bulls’ success continued. Abbey Croce and Mackenzie Moss finished eighth and ninth in the one-meter dive. Croce advanced to the finals after scoring 266.50 in the prelims. However, she couldn’t improve on that score in the finals with a finals session score of 231.05. Her preliminary score would have been good enough for second place in the finals. Nonetheless, she earned the Bulls 22 points with Moss adding 20 for her ninth-place finish.

The Bucknell Invite concludes on Sunday with the preliminary session beginning at 10 a.m and the finals session scheduled for 5 p.m. Diving preliminaries for the men’s three-meter dive will begin at 12:30 p.m., while the finals session will take place during the finals swim session.

La Salle:

Men-

LEWISBURG, Pa.- The La Salle men’s swimming and diving team had four swimmers record top five finishes on day two of the Bucknell Invitational.

Senior Johan Roth and sophomore Dimitrije Mladenovic both turned in top five times in the 100 yard breaststroke finals. Roth touched in fourth place thanks to a time of 55.94 while Mladenovic was right behind in 56.50 to earn 26 and 25 team points for La Salle respectively. Senior Jonathan Cabral also swam in the finals of the event touching in 58.54 for a 18th place finish, the second fastest in the C Finals for seven team points.

Sophomore Jakub Bartosiewicz turned in a fourth place performance in the 100 yard butterfly. Bartosiewicz finished in 49.52 seconds to take the 26 team points for La Salle. Juniors Strahinja Stankovic and Cameron Fadley also reached the finals, turning in the top two times in the C Finals. Stankovic finished in 17th place in 50.20 while Fadley was right behind in 18th with a time of 50.30.

Sophomore Fabian Bergman grabbed 27 team points for La Salle thanks to a third place finish in the 100 yard backstroke. Bergman finished in 49.89, just 4.02 seconds off the lead for the third place finish. Junior Jerry Gravel also swam in the event touching in 52.04 for a 20th place finish and five team points.

Freshman Aleksandar Nikolic reached the finals in the 200 yard freestyle race. Nikolic touched in 1:42.58 for a 13th place finish to grab 14 team points for La Salle.

The men’s relay team of Bergman, Roth, Bartosiewicz, and Cabral swam in the 200 yard medley relay and turned in a fourth place finish thanks to a combined time of 1:32.20 to earn 40 points towards the team score.

In the final event of the day the 800 yard freestyle relay the team of Bartosiewicz, senior Justin Hughes, Nikolic, and freshman Jeffrey Pfannenstain finished in 13th place with a time of 7:00.25.

The final day of the Bucknell Invitational is Sunday with the preliminary round getting underway at 10 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m.

Women-

LEWISBURG, Pa.- The La Salle women’s swimming and diving team had three women earn top-10 finishes on day two of the Bucknell Imitational.

The best event of the day for the women was the 400 yard IM where a pair of Explorers reached the A Finals. Junior Eva Marie Østerhus finished in fourth place thanks to a time of 4:26.38 while sophomore Emma Smith touched in seventh in 4:28.95.

Freshman Olivia DiStefano reached the wall sixth in the A Finals of the 100 yard backstroke thanks to a time of 56.67. The sixth place finish earned 24 team points for La Salle.

The Explorers had a pair of swimmers reach the B Finals in the 200 yard freestyle race. Junior Kate Hay was the top finisher for La Salle with a time of 1:53.00 for an 11th place finish. Smith also raced in the event finishing in 1:55.04 for 16th place.

Sophomore Maddy Koelsch reached the finals in the 100 yard breaststroke event. Koelsch touched in 1:07.52 for a 22nd place finish.

The La Salle relay team of Østerhus, Smith, Hay and sophomore Rory Kearns finished in fifth place in the 800 freestyle relay. The time of 7:33.58 earned the Explorers 38 team points.

In the women’s one meter diving event freshman Dominique DiRienzio turned in the top performance for La Salle with a 182.60 point total and a 14th place finish. Sophomore Sydney Szopo (16th, 177.80) and senior Kelly Quinn (17th, 165.40) also dove in the event.

The final day of the Bucknell Invitational is Sunday with the preliminary round getting underway at 10 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m.
