School Records Fall at House of Champions on Night 2

After day 2 at the House Of Champions meet hosted by IUPUI, Wisconsin Green Bay continues to lead the women’s meet, with the University of Indianapolis holding 1st place on the men’s side. Full results can be found here.

IUPUI:

INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams continued to fare well at the 12th House of Champions on Saturday (Nov. 21) as school record continued to fall on day two of the three-day meet. Specifically, Jon Stoller and Allison Cicero led the way as the Jaguars positioned themselves in both the men’s and women’s team standings.

The men’s team trails only Univ. of Indianapolis in the nine-team standings while the women’s squad is only behind Green Bay in the 10-team standings. The meet will conclude on Sunday (Nov. 22) with prelims starting at 10:30 a.m. and the finals will begin at 5:00 p.m..

Much like Friday, relays ignited the evening as the women’s 200 medley relay team earned a win in the first event of the night. The quartet of Alexis Bullard, Mary Klueh, Maranda Buha and Madison Taylor cruised to a win by more than a second over Green Bay’s quartet, touching at 1:44.23. The men’s team followed with a second-place finish as Aaron Brysch, Stoller, Josh Barajas and Lennart Kuester finished at 1:31.59.

Cicero, a freshman, then followed with a meet and school record in the 400 IM, finishing at 4:28.14 for an easy victory. She was joined in the A-final by Sarah Rozow and Stephanie Krause, who finished fifth and seventh, respectively.

In the 100 fly, relay teammates Buha and Bullard finished second and third respectively at 55.66 and 56.32. In the 200 free, Taylor of the women’s team and Kuester of the men’s team both collected second-place finishes. Kuester, who set the meet record in the event a year ago, touched at 1:39.77.

Stoller continued his strong day with a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke, finishing at 55.53, easily eclipsing the school record. Brysch had a big effort in the 100 backstroke, posting the second-best time in school history at 50.71, finishing third overall.

Earlier in the day, Stoller set a new school record in the 400 IM in an exhibition swim during the prelims, finishing at 4:02.33 to break a four-year old mark.

In the diving events, Krisztian Somhegyi dominated off the 1-meter board with a 6-dive score of 274.70, winning the event by nearly 12 points. Erik Romer was fourth at 258.95 andJosh Carmichael was sixth at 245.50. On the women’s side, Melissa Berger was third off the 3-meter board at 243.85 and Bailey Wills was sixth at 190.75.

Lewis:

Women-

INDIANAPOLIS – Senior Shelby Leonard (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota) broke, and then rebroke, the 100 butterfly school record for Lewis women’s swimming at the House of Champions event on Saturday (Nov. 21).

Leonard swam a time of 57.22 in the prelims to set a new mark. In the finals, she swam 56.86 to take fourth and lower the record even more.

Senior Montana Clasby (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) took second in the 100 breast (1:05.58). Sophomore Shannon Sullivan (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) took fourth in the 200 free (1:55.64).

The Flyers picked up a third place performance in the 800 freestyle relay (7:46.46). Leonard swam the first leg, with freshman Taylor Vera (Wyoming, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central), sophomoreMakenzie Murphy (Reno, Nev./Galena) and Sullivan following behind.

Lewis had a sixth place performance in the 100 backstroke as junior Kaitlyn Yearout (Ocala, Fla. /Trinity Catholic) swam the event in 58.18. Sophomore Caitlin Krull (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) took eighth in the 400 IM (4:48.61).

“We had a number of NCAA B cuts and some really great swims,” Lewis head coach Roger Karns said. “I am very pleased with their efforts.”

The Flyers will enter the third and final day of the event on Sunday in fourth place at the 10-team event with 627.5 points. The Flyers can’t earn diving points due to not sponsoring the sport.

Men-

INDIANAPOLIS – No. 18 Lewis men’s swimming had another strong day one Saturday (Nov. 21) during the second day of IUPUI’s House Of Champions.

Freshman Mads Knoblauch (Svenborg, Denmark/Svenborg Gymnasium) picked up a win in the 100 backstroke (49.97).

Lewis took third in the 200 medley relay. Knoblauch, senior Zach Ballon (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek), freshman Colin Williams (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) and senior Tommy Cornes (Napa, Cali./Vintage) recorded a time of 1:32.01.

Junior Brandon Thoman (Marco Island, Fla./Brarron Collier) had a time of 4:05.41 in the 400 IM to finish fourth. Junior Quinn Poti (Orlando, Fla./Timber Creek) finished seventh with a time of 4:07.10 in the finals, however it was his 4:05.00 in prelims in the morning that set a new school record in the event.

Freshman Colin Williams (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) was the only freshman in the finals of the 100 fly. He took third, touching the wall in 50.18.

Ballon swam a time of 55.83 to finish third in the 100 breaststroke.

Lewis grabbed a second place in the 800 free relay. Junior Adam Wise (Ocala, Fla./Forest), juniorBryant Jacobs (Pacifica, Calif./Terra Nova), senior Caio Azevedo (Governador Valadares, Brazil/Sommerville) and junior Aidan Brennan (Naples, Fla. /Barron Collier) stopped the clock in 6:50.24.

“We had a number of NCAA B cuts and some really great swims,” Lewis head coach Roger Karns said. “I am very pleased with their efforts.”

Lewis sits in fourth place at the nine-team meet with 818 points. The Flyers are unable to earn points in diving due to not sponsoring the sport.

Evansville:

INDIANAPOLIS – Another full day of action took place as the Purple Aces swimming and diving teams completed the second day of action at the House of Champions in Indianapolis.

“Today was a great day. A lot of season best times and a few life time best times. At the start of the meet today we talked about being brave and what it meant to be brave and they were awesome,” UE head coach Rickey Perkins said.  “Daniel O’Brien had an excellent night getting second in the 100 fly and finishing high on the 100 back. Overall a very exciting night and I believe tomorrow will be even better.”

O’Brien came home in second place overall in the 100 fly.  His effort of 49.84 was second out of 24.  He was just 0.75 behind the winner.  In the 100 back stroke, O’Brien swam a 51.00 to take 5th place.

In the 200 medley relay, the guys finished in sixth place with Dan O’Brien, Troy Burger, Prescott Marcy and Matt Childress swimming a 1:33.78.  Burger was also stellar in the 100 breaststroke.  He came in 9thwith a 57.32.  Everett Plocek was just behind him in the event, taking 11th with his time of 58.50.

UE’s top relay finish of the day on the women’s side came in the 800 free relay as Madi Jones, Bridget Sheridan, Jessi Hildebrand and Maja Magnusson posted a 7:53.69 to finish in 5th.

The group of Michaela Kent, Amy Smith, Charlotte Lechner and Mackenzie Harris placed seventh in the 200 medley relay with a final of 1:48.51.  Lechner struck again in the 100 fly as her 58.44 was good for 10th place.  Madi Jones was just 0.2 seconds behind her in 11th.

Kent had a strong finish in the 100 back.  Her final of 57.92 put her in fifth place.  Magnusson was the top UE finisher in the 200 free.  She swam a 1:57.92 en route to a 14th-place effort.  Amy Smith came home in 12th place in the 100 breaststroke.  She swam a 1:08.29.

On the boards, it was Courtney Coverdale leading the way with a second-place finish in the 3-meter dive.  Her score was 251.35.  Miguel Marcano was the top finisher for the men in the 1-meter, placing tenth with a score of 207.25.

Overall, the ladies rank in fifth place out of ten squads while the men are sixth out of 9.  Tomorrow, the teams will wrap up the event.

Eastern Illinois:

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – As second day at the House of Champions came to an end, the Eastern Illinois men’s & women’s swimming teams had themselves a competitive day as several relay teams and individuals found themselves earning points for the Panthers with their final results. The men currently stand with a team total of 293 points, while the women have earned 224 points.

The men’s 200-yard medley relay squad of Steve Fishman, Brandon Robbins, Stephen Truchon, and Shane Witzkigot things rolling as they earned an eighth place finish with a time of 1:34.67.  Robbins, along with Nick Harkins,Leo Garofalo, and Alex Laleian found themselves with the 11th best time in the 800-yard freestyle relay as they posted a time of 7:14.26. Bryan McPherson, Gerald Stingle, Dylan Ferguson, and Kyle Ruckert earned points for the Panthers with their 16th place finish at 7:37.54 in the 800-yard freestyle relay.

As three Panthers posted times in the finals in the 400-yard IM, Laleian finished as the top Panther in 20th place at 4:17.37. Harkins earned a 20th place finish at 4:23.18, and Ferguson in 24th with a time of 4:37.76 were the other two members who raced in the 400-yard IM. Jennings Soccorso swam in the 200-yard freestyle where he earned a 23rd place finish with a time of 1:49.62. Matt Jacobs rounded out the list for the men, with his time of 58.81 and 12th place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The EIU women’s 200-yard medley relay team of Martee Grainger, Kelsey Ferguson, Niki Beringer, and Caitlin Danforth got things started with their 18th place finish at 1:56.13.  Grainger and Danforth teamed up with Paige Eavenson and Lauren Oostman in the 800-yard freestyle relay to earn 12th place honors posting a time of 8:15.02.Carolyn Belford, Beth Houghton, Jessie Freudenthaler, and Beringer would finish not far behind in the 800-yard freestyle relay as their time of 8:44.17 was good enough for 15th place honors.

Ferguson posted the top individual mark for the Panthers as her time of 4:43.61 in the 400-yard IM was sixth best in the meet. Eavenson and Houghton also swam in the 400-yard IM. Eavenson finished in 10th place at 4:49.77, while Houghton was in 16th place with a time of 5:01.93. Kaylee Morris took home a time of 1:01.19 in the 100-yard butterfly which was good enough for 21st place. Joann Wakefield completed the list of individual finishes for the Panthers as she earned the 13th best time in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:08.67.

The Panthers will compete tomorrow for the third and final day at the House of Champions.

Centre College:

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (CentreAthletics.com) – The Centre swimming and diving teams returned to action on day two of three at the House of Champions meet in Indianapolis, Ind. on Saturday. The event is hosted by Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis at the IUPUI Natatorium.

After the second day of competition, the Colonel men and women both sit in ninth place. Centre is the only NCAA Division III team in the field.

On Saturday, senior Kristen Holliday (Newark, Del.) posted a fourth place finish with an NCAA “B” Cut standard time of 4:35.09 in the 400 IM.

Sophomore Noah Martin (Spartanburg, S.C.) finished with a time of 51.12 in the 100 Fly, good for ninth place in the event.

Senior John Coogan (Nashville, Tenn.) posted a mark of 1:53.24 in the 200 freestyle, while Bradley Baker (Paducah, Ky.) finished the 400 IM in 4:23.68.

Senior Dana Reynolds (Bowling Green, Ky.) added a time of 4:50.17 in the 400 IM, as well.

Sophomore diver Sarah Hayhurst (Newburgh, Ind.) posted scores of 15.00 and 14.10 in the 3M and 1M dives, respectively.

Centre caps competition at the House of Champions meet on Sunday in Indianapolis.
