Pitt Finishes Pittsburgh Invitational On Top

Pitt took home team titles on both the men’s and women’s sides on the final day of their own Pitt Invitational.

WOMEN’S MEET

Pitt started off with a big 1-2-3 sweep in the 1650, as Kaleigh Ritter led the charge with a 16:14.34 which currently places her 4th in the nation. 2nd place finisher Amanda Richey (16:23.66) came back to win the 200 back (1:59.00) as the only contender under two minutes.

Bowling Green picked up victories in the remaining individual events of the meet. First, Victoria Griffin went head-to-head with Pitt’s Emily Murphy, edging out Murphy 49.89 to 50.01.

Daniella Carrillo took top honors in the 200 breast (2:12.46) ahead of Pitt’s Kinga Cichowska (2:13.03), and then Jordan Bullock completed the Bowling Green sweep of the remaining individuals with a 2:02.04 in the 200 fly.

Pitt ended with a bang, however, getting a new school record from Murphy leading off the 400 free relay (49.50). Pitt finished on top at 3:20.47, also breaking a school record as an overall relay.

MEN’S MEET

Pitt distance dominated again, kicking off the last events of the meet with a 1-2 finish in the mile led by junior Scott Simmer (15:27.92).

They followed that up with a 1-2 punch in the 200 back, as Matt Tankle earned the W at 1:47.52 followed by freshman Brendan Barry (1:49.24).

St. Bonaventure’s Michael Pilyugin stole the 100 free from a pair of Pitt sprinters, touching first at 44.24 over David Sweeney (44.68) and Brian Lovasik (45.15).

Next, West Chester pulled off a 1-2 in the 200 breast. Leading was junior Michael Oliver at 1:59.79, the only man under two minutes. He was followed by sophomore Thomas McCormick at 2:02.65.

Pitt got back in the win column, though, in the 200 fly. Senior Mack Rice was the only swimmer under 1:50, touching at 1:48.15 for the victory.

Pitt ended like their women with a win in the 400 free relay at 2:59.30. Their big split came from the freshman Lovasik, who blasted a 43.97 on the anchor leg.
