14 Swimmers and 10 Divers from Division I Mid-Majors Qualify for 2023 Men’s NCAAs

2023 NCAA DIVISION I MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2023 Men’s Division I NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships are fast approaching. 235 swimmers and 35 divers will descend upon Minneapolis, Minnesota for the meet. Of those athletes, 14 swimmers an 10 divers are from Division I mid-major schools–that’s schools that aren’t a part of the Power 5 (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, PAC-12, and SEC).

This year, the American Athletic Conference (AAC), Colonial Conference Association (CAA), Horizon League, Mid-American Conference (MAC), Ivy League, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), and Western Athletic Conference (WAC) all have swimmers at the meet. The Summit League is also represented through Denver diver Zyad Morsy‘s qualification.

Like last year, the Ivy League leads the way, sending the most swimmers out of any mid-major conference to the meet. Seven swimmers from five different Ivy League schools qualified, representing Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, and Brown. That’s without Penn’s breaststroke ace Matt Fallon, who was missing from the psych sheets after reportedly suffering a back injury during training before Ivy League Championships. The Ivy League contingent gets bigger if you include the divers. Six divers from the Ivy League qualified for NCAAs thanks to their performance at Zone A Diving Championships.

Two schools are sending their first ever representatives to NCAAs. Sophomores Logan Kelly and Alex Scott are the first athletes from IUPUI to make the meet. Kelly will race both breaststroke events and is seeded 31st in the 100 (51.94) and 28th in the 200 breast (1:52.86). Scott qualified for plaftorm diving. California Baptist has gotten its first two qualifiers in swimmer Rémi Fabiani and diver Gael Jimenez.

Fabiani sits just outside of the scoring in the 50 freestyle at 17th, and there are seven other athletes who are projected to score in at least one event. Senior Wen Zhang (Air Force) is the highest seeded mid-major swimmer: he’s seeded fourth in the 200 free. But Yale’s Noah Millard is right behind him as the #5 seed in the 500 free (and is 15th in the 1650 free), while Brian Benzing (Towson) and Ruard Van Renen (Southern Illinois) are seeded seventh in the 100 breast and 100 backstroke, respectively.

Also seeded to score are SMU’s Colin Feehery (15th, 200 IM), Harvard’s Umitcan Gures (10th, 100 fly), and Princeton’s Raunak Khosla (9th, 200 IM & 14th, 200 fly).

SMU is not a mid-major, “powerhouse” would be more fitting

All swimmers need to have qualified individually in order for their relay to swim.

Not true. Relays have A cuts. You can verify this by looking at last years NCAAs. You’ll see UNLV swam their 400 freelay with no individual qualifiers.

Did we ever hear from Matt or Penn why Fallon wasn’t entered? (Or did I miss it?).
