Teagan O’Dell also had an impressive showing over the weekend as she pulled off 4 podium finishes. O’Dell won gold in the 200 freestyle, 200 backstroke, and 200 IM and earned a bronze medal in the 400 freestyle.
In the 200 IM, O’Dell was entered with a 2:17.40 originally, hit a 2:17.88 during the heats, and then powered her way to a 2:15.53 in the A final to take gold. In her final event, O’Dell swam a 4:22.99 for third place in the 400 freestyle final to improve upon her prelims swim of 4:24.05.
In the 200 free, O’Dell first hit a 2:04.16 during the prelims and then got down to a 2:02.09 to win the final. That swim for her was over a second faster than her entry time of 2:03.25. In the 200 back, O’Dell hit a 2:13.86 in the heats to advance as top seed into the final. She was even faster in the final, hitting a 2:10.70 for gold. Just as she did in the 200 free, she got under her seed time in the 200 backstroke which was a 2:13.86.
O’Dell’s 2:10.70 200 backstroke makes her the fastest 13-14 girl in the country this season, beating out 800 freestyle Olympian Katie Grimes‘ 2:14.84. She is also now the fastest in her age group in the 200 IM courtesy of her 2:15.53 swim which beats Emily Brown‘s second-ranked 2:18.20. In the 200 freestyle, O’Dell now sits in second place among 13-14-year-olds, trailing Claire Weinstein‘s 2:00.82. Finally, O’Dell’s 400 freestyle swim of 4:22.99 makes her the 8th fastest 13-14 girl in the country this season.
O’Dell’s teammate, 12-year-old Peter Vu also had a successful meet in Irvine and raced 4 events total including the 100 and 200 breaststroke, the 100 free, and the 200 IM.
Vu’s best result came in the men’s 200 breaststroke where he hit a 2:36.87 in the prelims and followed that up with a 2:34.30 in the C final. That time for Vu was an improvement upon his 2:36.57 seed time and makes him the fastest 11-12-year-old in the country this year by more than 4 seconds. His 2:34.30 is a full 4.3 seconds quicker than Owen Durham‘s 2:38.60.
In the 100 breaststroke Vu hit a 1:11.97 which was good enough for 30th overall meaning that he didn’t get a second swim. That time for Vu was just a bit slower than his 1:11.60 entry time in the event which he swam earlier this season. Vu’s 1:11.60 also makes him the quickest 11-12 nationwide this season, ahead of Oryan Liu‘s second-ranked 1:13.18.
Vu also finished 51st in the 200 IM with a 2:21.83 and 97th in the 100 freestyle with a 58.52. Those swims were both a bit off the 2:21.46 and 57.66 he posted at the 2021 Speedo Grand Challenge earlier this season to give him the respective #1 and #3 rankings among 11-12-year-olds.
Weinstein blasted a 1.58 something leading off the 8FR relay at a meet in NY
1:58.95.

I like the news stories better when the swimmer’s team is identified, please.
The 200 back time seems even more impressive than the 200 IM. I’m surprised that didn’t make the headline!
Exactly what I thought. 2.10 in the 200 back is much better than 2.15 in the 200 IM.
Great swims! Her 200 back is 7th fastest 13-14 ever and 200 IM is 5th. The 200 back time would’ve placed her 11th in semifinals at Trials.
