The 2022 TISCA-Gulf Invite took place this past week in Shenandoah, Texas. Each year, TISCA hosts a series of meets across the state in November that serve as “mid-season” meets for Texas high school teams. Similar to collegiate mid-season invites, these meets are typically held in a prelim-final format and teams usually suit up. All of the schools who competed at this invite are in Class 6A for the 2022-2023 season.

The Woodlands High School dominated the team standings for both girls and boys, with their boys winning by a 187-point margin, and the girls winning by a 431-point margin.

Top 5 Teams (Boys):

  1. The Woodlands – 438
  2. Kingwood – 251
  3. Tompkins – 205
  4. Humble Atascocita – 172
  5. Klein Cain – 168

Top 5 Teams (Girls):

  1. The Woodlands – 656
  2. Jordan – 225
  3. Kingwood – 205
  4. The Woodlands College Park – 171
  5. Humble Summer Creek – 162

The highlight of this year’s meet was 15-year-old John Simmons posting a time of 1:38.47 to place 2nd in the 200 free. Simmons, who represents Humble Atascocita High School, entered the meet with a personal best of 1:43.53, which he set at the North Texas SC Age Group Champs meet in March.

In prelims, Simmons dropped over two seconds to post a 1:41.15. At finals, he dropped another 2.68 seconds to clock in at 1:38.47. He finished behind Texas A&M commit Brendan Studdert, who won with a best time of 1:38.25. Simmons and Studdert would have placed 4th and 5th with those times at last season’s UIL 6A State meet.

According to the SWIMS database, Simmons’ time ranks 2nd so far this year for 15-year-olds, as Ryan Erisman posted a 1:38.07 at the Florida High School 4A State meet. His swim also ties him with Ryan Murphy for  50th all-time among 15-year-olds.

Logan Brown, the #11-ranked recruit in the boys high school class of 2023, posted wins in both the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM. Neither were personal bests, but he won the 200 IM by almost four seconds (1:49.64), and posted a 54.85 to win the 100 breast.

William Woodall, a Utah commit, swept the sprint freestyle races. He posted a personal best in the 50 free by a few tenths to win in 20.47. He did the same in the 100, as he clocked another personal best by a few tenths to win with a 45.13.

On the girls side, Evlin Reiderer and Kayla Fu each picked up two individual wins. Reiderer, a junior from The Woodlands, took first in the 200 IM and 100 breast. She dominated the 200 IM, winning by almost five seconds to post a personal best time of 2:01.84. She posted a 100 breast of time 1:02.68, which while not a best time, was about half a second faster than she was at this meet last year.

Fu, a junior from Clements, won the 50 free and 100 free. She won the 50 in a personal best time of 22.90, shaving off 0.02 hundredths from her swim at the UIL State Championships in February. Fu won the 100 in 50.22, nearly a second faster than runner-up Brooke Miller.
