While competing on day 1 of the 2022 Italian Spring Championships, 15-year-old Lorenzo Galossi fired off a new European Junior Record in the men’s 400m freestyle.
Hitting the wall in a time of 3:45.93, Galossi remarkably beat out Olympic medalist Gabriele Detti to snag the silver behind winner Marco De Tullio tonight in Riccione.
MEN’S 400 METERS FREESTYLE
- Italian Record : DETTI Gabriele 3:43.23 21/07/2019 Gwangju
- World Championships QT: 3:45.40
- European Juniors QT: 3:53.8
PODIUM
- DE TULLIO Marco (Aniene Rowing Club) 3:44.47 World Championships qualified
- GALOSSI Lorenzo (Aniene Rowing Club) 3:45.93 European Record Jr / Italian Jr
- DETTI Gabriele (CS Army / In Sport Rane Rosse) 3:46.12
After producing a time of 3:50.04 in the morning heats to claim the 3rd seed, Galossi ripped his 3:45.93 to conquer the previous EJR held by Hungarian Gabor Zombori at 3:46.06 from 2019.
Entering this meet, Galossi’s personal best in this event rested at the 3:53.62 he produced in August of last year. As such, in the span of less than a year, the teen has managed to drop nearly 8 seconds from his career-quickest in this LCM 400 free.
His 3:45.93 would have placed just outside of the top 8 finishers at both the 2019 FINA World Championships as well as the 2020 Olympic Games.
The men’s 4free podium here all now enter the top of the world rankings, with De Tullio at #1, Galossi at #2 and Detti at #4.

This is the second huge swim from Galossi in just a matter of weeks. He already put up another lifetime best in the short course meters version of this event late last month at the Italian Junior Championships. Galossi’s time there checked in at 3:39.90 for a new age record.
Italian swimming getting stronger & stronger.
I can see him and Popovici in Paris wrecking havoc in the 400 and the 100 free respectively and then battling it out in the 200, like Thorpe and Hoogie did back in the days… But of course that’s just me day-dreaming
It’s possible for sure, but Popovici will need to be levels better than the field in the 100 to win after racing the 200.
The last guys to medal in both was Thorpe. Nobody has won both since 1992.
Hoogie won gold in the 100 and 200 in Sidney. Then in Athens he won gold and silver
Why are the comments so chill. Guys. A 15 fricken year old kid went 3:45… He’s faster than 99% of the US distance men. Heck, he could probably win the U.S trials. As. A. 15. Year. Old.
And that sort of ultra-young development is much rarer for men than for women (ie. Ledecky’s gold medal at age 15)
I remember Thorpe swam 3:45 in 1998 as a 15 yo…. wearing briefs
Galossi has a bright future. He set italian nag records in all events from 100 to 1500 free. I can see him to focus on 200/400/800. Probably the most talented boy ever seen in Italy.
If he keeps it up, we’ll have to call him “Thorpetti”
I believe that’s faster than Thorpe was at the same age. Thorpe won worlds at 15 in 3:46+ (in a brief).
Edit: Saw below Thorpe went 3:44.3 at commonwealth games after worlds.
Keep forgetting Mack Horton Owns the official WJR but that’s an insane drop especially since he’s only 15 should be fun to watch this kid.
LUKAS MAERTENS 3:41.6
Where was that?

Wow that is I believe #9 all time and the fastest time in quite a few years
Fastest since Mack Horton in 2012 if I’m not mistaken…mindblown
It’s 2016 but yeah finally somebody might challenge the world record this year.
Edit: correction sun yang went 3:41.3 in 2017
Is Detti prequalified?
No
Oof, he’s been such a staple the last 6 years. Hoping his 200 will be better.
