16 Swimmers Swim Olympic Trials Cuts At EZ Northern Speedo Sectionals

2016 Eastern Zone Northern Region Speedo Sectional Meet

16 swimmers came in underneath the U.S. Olympic Trials standards this weekend at the Eastern Zone Northern Region Speedo Sectional Meet in Buffalo, New York.

Matea Samardzic, who swims for Saint Peter’s in the collegiate season, led the surge with five victories and six times underneath the U.S. Olympic Trials standard. Samardzic, however, is a Croatian national, and she has already qualified to swim the 200 back in Rio this summer. Her wins came in the 800 free (8:49.13), 100 back (1:02.15), 400 free (4:20.47), 200 back (2:12.39), and 200 IM (2:16.87).

Drew Modrov, formerly of Auburn University and Rider University, scored a pair of wins in the sprint free events, taking the 50 free in 22.76 and the 100 free in 50.84. However, his prelims swim in the 100 was faster, a 50.35 that notches his ticket to Trials. Modrov’s 50 was also a Trials cut, as was his third-place 100 fly (54.76).

Florida commit Makayla Sargent notched a pair of OT cuts with her 400 IM (4:46.53) and 200 IM (2:17.51) performances. She won the 200 free (2:03.53) and the 400 IM.

Samardzic’s Saint Peter’s teammate Jonathan Gomez, who swims for Colombia internationally, took a pair of wins in the 400 IM (4:30.49) and the 200 fly (2:00.53).

John Montesi, a Notre Dame commit, swam a pair of Olympic Trials cuts with wins in the 100 fly (54.03) and the 100 back (56.84).

No, he is 14, and he swims for Morris County, NJ. Even though he made the Olympic Trials cut, I do believe he won’t make it onto the National Team (perhaps the Junior National Team?), as he will probably be destroyed by all the other top seeded swimmers for the 100 Back
