Seemanova Breaks National Record and Becomes First Czech Woman Sub 55

At the European Junior Championships, 16 year-old Barbora Seemanova broke the Czech National Record in the 100 free. You can view full results of the meet here

Seemanova broke the record in a time of 54.97 to earn 2nd place in the event. Freya Anderson of Great Britain won the event in a time of 54.72. The previous Czech record was held by Anna Kolarova with a time of 55.26.

Seemanova’s swim also represents the first time a Czech woman has been under 55 in the 100 free. In addition, Seemanova is the first Czech woman to be under 2 minute in the 200 freestyle with her performance earlier this month at the Czech Cup. In that performance, Seemanova bested the field by almost 8 full seconds, proving her dominance in Czech swimming. That swim stripped Kolarova of her other record in the 200 free, leaving Kolarova currently off the Czech record board.

At the Games in Baku last summer, Seemanova was 4th in the 100 (56.85) and 8th in the 200 free (2:03.07). She also competed at the 2015 World junior Championships where she came in 15th in the 100 free (56.55) and 26th in the 200 free (2:04.71). Seemanova’s times have quickly improved and the future is looking bright for the Czech teen born in 2000.

Seemanova will swim the 200 free tomorrow at Euro Junior Champs as the 2nd seed, and will also swim the 50 free on Saturday.
