16 Year Old Ribeiro de Souza Breaks 50 Second Barrier in the 100 freestyle

Yesterday evening 16-year old Felipe Ribeiro de Souza took the boy’s 100 freestyle at the Brazilian Youth Championships in a time of 49.93. His time breaks Matheus Santana‘s Brazilian age group record of 50.25 which was set in 2012.

De Souza now holds the 13, 14, 15 and 16-year olds Brazilian age group records in the 100 freestyle.

  • 13 yr – 54.40
  • 14 yr – 52.25
  • 15 yr – 51.00
  • 16 yr – 49.93

This was the second time in two days that De Souza had an impressive 100 freestyle. On the first day of competition he anchored his 4 x 100 freestyle relay team in a split of 49.46.

  • Relay split – 49.46 (23.65/25.81)
  • Tonight’s final – 49.93 (24.12/25.81)

De Souza’s next goals in the 100 freestyle will include Santana’s 17 year old age group record of 49.13. Santana holds the junior world record in the event having posted a 48.25 at the Youth Olympic Games last summer.

De Souza still has the 50 freestyle to come at the championships where he will attempt to break Santana’s championship record of 23.12, though Santana’s age record is still a little faster in 22.79.

Santana and De Souza are training partners.
