Day two of the 2023 Korean Swimming Championships brought a new national record in the women’s 100m freestyle.

17-year-old Hur Yeonkyung busted out a new lifetime best of 54.74 to grab the gold tonight in Gimcheon, holding a healthy lead over the next-closest swimmer Jeong Soeun. Jeong settled for silver in 55.47.

As for Hur, her effort tonight erased the previous Korean national standard of 54.82 Jeong put on the books last July. The teen’s effort also crushed her own previous personal best of 55.08 produced at the 2022 Korean Trials.

At the 2022 World Championships, Hur placed 23rd in a time of 55.50.

Hur now becomes just the 4th Korean swimmer to have ever delved under the 55-second threshold in this women’s 100m freestyle event.

Top 5 Korean Women’s LCM 100 Freestyle Performers All-Time

  3. Kim Seoyeong, 54.83 2020
  4. Jiwon Choi, 55.27 2016

The World Aquatics ‘A’ standard for this summer’s World Championships rests at 54.25 which means Hur fell short of the mark. However, at just 17 years of age, she’s headed on the right trajectory with the Asian Games on the horizon.
