18 Athletes To Represent South Africa in Doha

The South African Short Course Swimming Championships wrapped this evening in Pietermaritzburg with a total of 18 athletes qualifying for the 2014 World Short Course Championships which will be held in Doha in December. 

The final night of competition saw Chad le Clos take home his third title of championships in the men’s 200 butterfly winning in a time of 1:53.42. le Clos appears to be closing out his summer with these championships as the 100 and 200 butterfly Commonwealth gold medalist has chosen to skip the upcoming Pan Pacific Championships.

Two other athletes in the race were both under the world championships qualifying standard, Sebastien Rousseau recorded a 1:54.55 while Michael Meyer posted a 1:55.39.

Meyer also took the men’s 200 IM in a time of 1:56.94.

Brad Tandy made his first world championships qualifying time winning the men’s 50 freestyle in a time of 21.55.

Myles Brown took the men’s 1500 freestyle in a time of 14:51.66 followed by Troyden Prinsloo who finished second in a time of 15:02.52. Both Brown and Prinsloo made the qualifying standard in the event.

North Carolina State’s Stephanus Coetzer won his second event of the championships collecting the gold in the men’s 200 backstroke posting a time of 1:56.19.

Karin Prinsloo took her third title of the competition winning the women’s 200 freestyle in a time of 1:56.93.

Tatjana Schoenmaker won the women’s 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:07.81 followed by Tara Nicholas who finished in a time of 1:08.03.

Lehesta Kemp took the women’s 50 freestyle in a world championships qualifying time of 25.28.

Cameron van der Burgh finished his sweep of the men’s breaststroke events taking the men’s 50 breaststroke in a time of 26.72.
