After the YMCA Short Course National Championships wrapped up on Saturday, the Greensboro Community YMCA spun the pool and hosted a single-day long course meet to give swimmers an opportunity to take advantage of their tapers in a long course pool.

The swimmer who took the biggest advantage was Brendan Whitfield from the Lynchburg YMCA in Virginia, posting new lifetime bests in both the 50 meter and 100 meter freestyles.

In the 50, he clocked a 22.96; in the 100, he clocked a 50.19. In his first long course racing since August’s Junior Nationals, those are both time drops – his 100 free knocked .29 seconds off his best of 50.48 from last August, while the 50 knocked the same .29 seconds off his previous best.

It’s still early in the long course season, but Whitfield’s times rank him 2nd and

Top 5 of the Season – 18 & under 50 meter freestylers, US:

  1. Kaii Winkler, Eagle Aquatics – 22.49 (16)
  2. Brendan Whitfield, Lynchburg Y – 22.96 (18)
  3. Douglas Walker, Marlins of Raleigh – 23.07 (18)
  4. Andrew Kravchenko, Bolles – 23.20 (15)
  5. Joshua Howat, NCAP – 23.24 (15)

Top 5 of the Season – 18 & under 100 meter freestylers, US:

  1. Kaii Winkler, Eagle Aquatics – 48.81 (16)
  2. Henry McFadden, Jersey Wahoos – 49.60 (17)
  3. Brendan Whitfield, Lynchburg Y – 50.19 (18)
  4. Tomas Koski, Unattached – 50.46 (18)
  5. Daniel Diehl, CUmberland Y – 51.34 (17)

Those drops punctuate a spectacular senior season for the Virginia Tech commit that has seen him rise to one of the top sprinters in the class. He won YMCA National Championships last week in the 50 yard free (19.48), 100 yard free (42.67), 200 yard free (1:33.97), and 100 fly (46.26), all of which were new personal bests.

Whitfield is still chasing the Olympic Trials standards of 22.79 and 49.99 in the 50 and 100 freestyles, respectively.
