The 2021 TYR 18&Under Spring Cup kicked off at each of the 4 sites (Des Moines, Irvine, Orlando, Richmond) last night, featuring the women’s 800 free and men’s 1500 free.

Nation’s Capital 18-year-old Paige McKenna won the women’s 800 free in 8:39.08, just off her personal best of 8:38.37, which she swam in July of 2019. Although it wasn’t a best time, McKenna’s swim marked her fastest of the 2021 by 5 seconds, and her 2nd time under 8:40 in her career. She also negative split the race, taking it out in 4:20.06 on the first 400, and came home in 4:19.02. McKenna is a Wisconsin recruit.

Finishing 2nd in the 800 was Westchester Aquatic Club 14-year-old Claire Weinstein, who swam an 8:41.44. The swim crushed her previous best of 8:45.34, which she posted in January of this year, when she was still 13. With the swim, Weinstein picked up an Olympic Trials Wave II cut, marking her first Wave II cut. Kristin Cornish, a 17-year-old from Badger Swim Club, came in 3rd with a 8:46.87, which came in under her previous best of 8:48.44. The swim marks a Wave I cut for the Johns Hopkins recruit.

South Jersey Aquatic Club 17-year-old Shane Washart took the men’s 1500 free in 15:51.24, marking his first time under 16:00 in the event. His previous best of 16:01.68 was from August of 2019.
