#2 Ranked Recruit Brendan Burns Verbals To Indiana

The Indiana Hoosiers have picked up a verbal commitment from Pennsylvania State champ Brendan Burns, who will join the team in the fall of 2019. Burns made the announcement on Instagram earlier today:

“Proud to announce my verbal commitment to Indiana University! Can’t wait to be a Hoosier and join an incredible academic and swimming community!”

Burns, a native of Berwyn, Pennsylvania, was the AAA Boys State Champ in both the 100 back and 100 fly back-to-back in 2017 and 2018. Most recently, he won four events at the YMCA Short Course Nationals in April, claiming the 100 & 200 back and the 100 & 200 fly.

Burns will be a welcome addition to a Hoosier squad that has been on a dramatic rise the past few seasons, culminating with their 3rd place finish at NCAAs. Along with his prowess in back and fly, Burns also has a strong freestyle pedigree. Take a look at some of his best times below (SCY):

  • 50 free: 20.09
  • 100 free: 44.14
  • 200 free: 1:36.01
  • 50 back: 21.72
  • 100 back: 46.24
  • 200 back: 1:42.17
  • 100 fly: 46.61
  • 200 fly: 1:42.94
  • 200 IM: 1:47.20

He’s already within striking distance of NCAA scoring position in four different events, and will instantly make a big impact for Indiana at Big Ten’s, not only individually, but in relays. He’s improving rapidly, and was ranked as the #2 recruit in the class by us recently, coming in as the fastest in both back and fly events. Burns is the last of the top 8 ranked recruits to announce a verbal commitment. Among others, he’ll get the opportunity to train with Brazilian Gabriel Fantoni, who’s coming off his freshman campaign with IU where he won the Big Ten title in the 100 back.

If you have a commitment to report, please send an email with a photo (landscape, or horizontal, looks best) and a quote to [email protected].

So awesome that the school of Mark Spitz and Doc Counsilman is back on top. As a fan of swimming history I have to appreciate that.

Please clarify this statement. Pretty broad and baseless claim to throw out against a Kid/school on an anonymous message

He’s got quite a bit of a ceiling as far as getting cut goes. He looks safe for a while.

For real tho IU is gonna be gooooood the next 5+ years.

He doesn’t have to beat them to be great, or help his team win a title.

Plus, plenty of time for all these kids to develop, plateau, etc

Signed, Texas fan

Does he finish his career at Indiana or Arizona State?

I doubt all the IU > ASU swimmers even finish at ASU. I say 2/3 of the 16+ swimmers coming into ASU don’t even finish there.
