Veracruz, Mexico, November 20, 2014 – The final day of swim competition at this year’s CAC Games came with two new meet records, as well as a sixth gold medal being added to the vault of Venezuela’s Andreina Pinto.
Women’s Events
Pinto’s sixth individual gold came from her win in tonight’s 200m butterfly, where she touched the wall in 2:11.24, over two seconds faster than the rest of the field. Earning silver tonight was Mexico’s Maria Mata (2:13.48), followed by Colombia’s Jessica Maria Camposano (2:14.18).
Maria Fernanda Gonzalez (Mexico) was able to put the finishing touch on her sweep of the backstroke events, adding the 200m backstroke gold (2:13.47) to her collection from the 50m and 100m backstroke events earlier in the games. Carolina Colorado (Colombia) touched in second in 2:18.26, while Gisela Morales (Guatemala) earned a bronze in 2:19.14.
The 50m freestyle event saw a familiar name finishing in its top spot. Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace (Bahamas) earned the gold in a strong 25.24 to go along with her sprinting portfolio of gold medals from this meet. Earlier she had won the 50m and 100m butterfly races, as well as the 100m freestyle. Vanessa Garcia (Puerto Rico) claimed silver in 25.63, while Liliana Ibanez (Mexico) rounded out the top three in a time of 26.04.
The final women’s event of these games was the 4 x 100m medley relay. Mexico ended up on top in this event tonight, winning gold in 4:10.04.
Men’s Events
Colombia’s Omar Pinzon started the night by breaking the 100m backstroke CAC Games record held by Rodolfo Falcon (Venezuela) dating back to 1998. Pinzon cleared the old mark of 55.60 with his new time tonight of 55.48. Albert Subirats (Venezuela), who had a stellar finals last night, touched in second with a time of 55.68, followed by Armando Barrera (Cuba) in 56.54.
The men’s 200m breaststroke event also saw its previous games record go down, as 18-year-old Carlos Claverie from Venezuela smashed the 2:16.10 mark with his new time of 2:12.44. Claverie is another multiple-medal-winner at this games, having already won the 400m IM and 100m breaststroke events. Miguel Del Lara (Mexico) also passed the old record mark, earning silver in 2:14.78, as did Jorge Murillo (Colombia) with his bronze-medal-winning time of 2:14.90.
In the final event for the men, George Bovell (Trinidad & Tobago) simply owned the 50m freestyle from start-to-finish, blazing to the wall first in 22.30. This is just a hair off the current CAC Games record, which he also holds, at 22.23. Following Bovell was Renzo Tjon-A-Joe from Suriname (22.62) and Hanser Garcia (Cuba) in 22.69.
