2-Time Worlds Team Member Abrahm DeVine to Join Team Elite in San Diego

Recent Stanford graduate Abrahm DeVine is heading to San Diego to train under David Marsh, he confirmed to SwimSwam Sunday.

DeVine, a Seattle native, spent the past four years training at Stanford, which recently switched leadership from longtime coach Ted Knapp to former Hawai’i head coach Dan Schemmel. Schemmel also brought in Wisconsin’s Neil Caskey as his assistant, and former Stanford assistant Jeff Kostoff, who worked primarily with the distance team (including DeVine), is heading to the University of Minnesota. DeVine was a four-year All-American and won back-to-back NCAA titles his junior and senior year in the 400 IM.

He was a member of the United States’ 2017 and 2019 FINA World Championships teams, finishing 10th in the 200 IM in 2017 and eighth in 2019. DeVine also finished second to Chase Kalisz in the 200 IM at U.S. Summer Nationals in 2018, qualifying for Pan Pacs later that summer, where he finished fifth in the event (and 29th in prelims of the 200 free).

DeVine was announced as a member of the ISL’s DC Trident in June and signed with swimwear brand arena last month. He’ll join fellow Stanford alum Lia Neal, as well as a star-studded roster that includes Michael Chadwick, Kathleen Baker, Jacob Pebley, Ryosuke Irie, Kendyl Stewart, Ali DeLoof, and Marius Kusch, among others, in Southern California.

Are we trying to change Abraham’s mind with these comments or just make him feel bad about his decision? I hope it is the former.

Keep in mind that one of David’s female swimmers did a 2:08.32 200m IM last summer, which is Silver medal range.

I wish Abraham the very best.

This is a comments section for swim fans (miserable losers), and in this case, specifically for fans of pro athletes. If Devine takes the advice of us Miserable Losers, he has no right to call himself a pro. It never ceases to amaze me how our sport has the only comment section about pro athletes that many think is supposed to be all pat on the backs and participation awards.

what about Marsh recruiting kids to SD and then quitting? One might suggest that is the actions of a miserable loser.

Is this Marsh’s mom or some 1970’s my-way-or-the-highway coach?

Did the Troy pros outside of Dressel produce this year?

Not a shot at anyone, honestly a question out of curiosity.

(I think Wondering mighty have been referencing that Litherland was the only UGa pro to produce since lots of commenters invoked UGa.)
