2013 Women’s NCAA’s Final Day Up/Downs

Without diving or the 1650 accounted for, two events where the Bulldogs will score points, Georgia heads into tonight’s final with 9 total swimmers, including two more A-finalists than the seeds had them at. Cal also improved their standing from seeds, but without any serious scoring threat in the mile, and a 15-point deficit to make up, it doesn’t look like the Golden Bears have done quite enough.

Florida did fairly well in the morning also, as they try and run down USC for 6th place, though the Trojans improved by turning a projected B-Finalist into an A-finalist whereas Florida lost an A-Finalist. Florida has a relay in the A-Final, whereas USC’s is in the B, however USC diver Haley Ishimatsu took 2nd in the platform diving prelims and will score much bigger points in that event.

Texas A&M  dropped one swimmer, but still should perform well in the mile later tonight between Melanie McClaine and Sarah Henry. Tennessee got a diver Tori Lamp into the final of the platform (their other, Jodie McGroarty, didn’t compete platform). They’ll need those points if they want to hang on for 3rd, as the Aggies did decently on this final day.

The Notre Dame women really surprised to get not just one, but two of their backstrokers into the B-Final. The Irish are best known for the exploits of breaststroker Emma Reaney (who is seeded to medal tonight), but they have some other very good pieces, including depth in the backstrokes.

North Carolina continued to outswim seeds; specifically, they got two swimmers up into the 200 fly A-Final. With Auburn’s 400 free relay falling to the B-Final, the Tar Heels might be the only team with a chance at catching Minnesota for a top 10 finish (though the Gophers are in good shape, with a few diving points coming and Haley Spencer in the 200 breaststroke).

NOTE: THE TOTALS IN THE TOTALS COLUMN DOES NOT INCLUDE MILES IN ORDER TO GIVE A FAIRER COMPARISON.
