2014 ARENA GRAND PRIX AT SANTA CLARA

Women’s 200 Butterfly – Prelims

We are experiencing technical difficulties with the results of this event. We will update as soon as we can. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Men’s 200 Butterfly – Prelims

Bobby Bollier was the only swimmer to break 2 minutes in the men’s 200 butterfly. He touched the was at 1:59.59 Chase Kalisz was very close, qualifying second with a time of 2:00.10. Sebastian Rosseau, Ben Colley, Corey Okubo, and John Martins qualified 3rd-6th and were all at 2:00’s.

Tyler Clary finished with the seventh fastest time of the morning, clocking in at 2:01.09.

Women’s 100 Breaststroke – Prelims

Jenna Van Camp cut 2.6 seconds off her entry time to swim the fastest time of the morning out of the fourth heat. She touched the wall with a time of 2:10.15. Tera Ban Beilen had the second fastest time, finishing with a 1:10.22. Kasey Carlson, Fiona Doyle, and Laura Sogar were also in the 1:10 range.

Abby Duncan had the ninth fastest time from the A flight, posting a 1:11.29.

Men’s 100 Breaststroke – Prelims

Mike Alexanderov was the only swimmer to break 1:02, swimming the fastest qualifying time out of the A flight at 1:01.69. Felipe Lima was second with a 1:02.19. Richard Funk, Kevin Cordes, and Nic Fink were third through 5th. Cordes sat back during prelims of the 200 breaststroke, similarly to what he did today, landing in the middle of the A final. He went on to win the 200 breaststroke in finals so we should expect him to be just as aggressive during finals tonight.

Women’s 100 Backstroke – Prelims

Liz Pelton touched the wall with a 1:00.87 for the fastest time of the morning. She was the top seed after swimmer her 200 backstroke in prelims yesterday. The 16 year old Amy Bilquist has been on fire all weekend. She has made finals in several events and is now the second seed in the women’s 100 backstroke ahead of some talented swimmers. Her time was 1:01.58; a .75 second drop.

Cheyenne Coffman and Missy Franklin finished third and fourth at 1:01.70 and 1:01.99, respectively.

Rachel Bootsma had the 9th fastest time during the A flight with her time of 1:02.60.

Men’s 100 Backstroke – Prelims

Move out of the way for Arkady Vyatchanin! He is shooting for his fourth 100 backstroke victory in a row during the 2014 Arena Grand Prix series. Corey Main qualified in second at 55.59 in front of Matt Grevers at 55.62. Adam Mania and Eugene Godsoe were also under 56 seconds for 4th and 5th.

Jack Blyzinski had the ninth fastest time from the A-flight with a 57.10.

Women’s 200 IM – Prelims

Caitlin Leverenz went a 2:15.82 touched the wall at 2:15.82 to take the top seed of the women’s 200 IM. Sarah Henry came in second at 2:16.17, followed by Theresa Michalak with a 2:16.25. Karlee Bispo, Celina Li, and Shannon Vreeland were 4th through 6th at 2:16’s. Becca Mann had the ninth fastest time of the A flight at 2:18.43.

Men’s 200 IM – Prelims

Welcome back, Michael! Michael Phelps ran away from the final heat, winning with a 2:00.89. Pending any scratches, he will be surrounded by his two teammates, Chase Kalisz and Conor Dwyer, in finals. Kalisz had the second fastest swim with a 2:01.69, followed by Dwyer’s 2:02.05. We are hoping that trio swims in finals tonight because it could be an awesome race to watch. Conor Dwyer seems to get better and stronger every year and Chase Kalisz has been the one who has come the closest to filling Michael Phelps’ shoes. He has already taken down his 400 yard IM record and is on a path to start beating more of Phelps’ times.

Beisel went 8:33.26 in the early heats of the 800 today. Not bad for her fourth or fifth best event. It’s looking like a real good Nationals is brewing for her.

As a butterflyer, growing up in the Missouri Valley LSC at the same time as Bobby Bollier was an extended exercise in humility. Nicest kid ever, though. It’s great to see him doing so well lately. I’m hoping he kills it tonight and pulling for him in 2016!

If Missy doesn’t win the 100 back in a decent time, I’m going to be a little worried.

Is anybody else frustrated that the “live results” take HOURS to post? I know it’s because they have to wait until the B flight swimmers finish, but I still hate it! I wish the SwimSwam summaries above could list the top 9 names, even if they don’t list times for most of them.

200 IM:
Finally Leverenz looked good in a race!
It will be fun to see the 3 friends from NBAC competing against each other from the center lanes in the 200 IM (Kalisz, Dwyer, Phelps). Dwyer has really nice fly and backstrokes!
Phelps looked like a man competing against boys! He’s going to swim a decent time in finals. I’m SO glad he actually… Read more »

Is anybody else frustrated with the “live results”?
I believe I’ve made enough comments about that to show my frustration!
And that new system of B flight is not a good idea in my opinion.
And I don’t like in general the new system of the Grand Prix meets.
I preferred the previous system with all the heats and we had the results of each event a few minutes later.
Same thing for the finals. We had the C-Final, the B-Final and the A-Final. It was simple. And we had the results just after the end of the A-Final.
And we also had a medal… Read more »

And with his first swim in the event in almost two years, Phelps casually takes the fourth-best time among US men this year, behind Dwyer, Prenot, and Kalisz. I’m betting he breaks 2:00 tonight and takes the top spot from Dwyer (currently 2:00.03).
