Pre-Session Scratches
While there will still be some empty lanes left with last-minute scratches in prelims on Thursday, we noticed at least three noteworthy swimmers who were respectful enough to scratch out of their races prior to the deadline.
Curtis Ogren has dropped the boys’ 200 backstroke to focus on one of his specialty events, the 400 IM, instead. He’s the top seed in the 400 IM, and was the 4th seed in the 200 back. That move is not a surprise, as Ogren, like many swimmers at this meet, is really just using Juniors as a final tune-up for seniors next week, so there’s no reason to over-exert with big doubles.
Corey Okubo, with the 200 fly title already under his belt, is doing just the opposite – staying in the 200 back, where he’s the 2nd seed, and dropping the 400 IM, where he was also the 2nd seed coming into the meet to Ogren. Okubo hinted to SwimSwam’s Anne Lepesant that he was probably going to shut his meet down after the backstroke; as an Irvine native, he’s in an even better position to just test the waters a bit here at Juniors before turning his attention to making an international team at Seniors (Pan Pacs for 2014 and World University Games for 2015, both chosen next week, seems like a very good shot for him).
And finally, breaststroke ace Emma Cain dropped out of the 400 IM. The 14-year old from the Aspen Swim Club in Colorado still has her best event, the 200 breaststroke, left for later in the meet, and as the top seed in that event she’ll want to make sure she can give it a full effort.
Enjoy the show! The party starts at 9 A.M. California time with the women’s 200 backstroke heats.
