2014 Youth Olympic Games Medals Revealed!

The medals for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China have been revealed. The 2014 edition is the second edition of this global multi-sport spectacular that is designed for athletes aged 14 to 18 years old.

The 2014 event will begin on August 14th and run through the 28th, with swimming scheduled for August 17th-22nd.

What’s really cool about these medals is that one side of them was chosen from a public contest, and a 23-year old Slovakian won over 300 other entries. Matej Čička is otherwise of no particular artistic repute that we can find,

A description of the medals, according to meet organizers:

“The pictures show the cast medal in its gold, silver and bronze forms. One side (face A – above) is the winning design of 23-year-old Matej Čička from Slovakia, whose creation entitled “Track of Winners” won the International Olympic Committee’s Medal Design Competition earlier this year, chosen from a pool of 300 entries from all over the world.

Created by the Nanjing 2014 organisers, face B is inspired by the landscape of Nanjing’s historical city, combining the ancient city wall gate, traditional architecture of the region, the Qinhuai River and Nanjing’s famous plum blossoms. The Nanjing 2014 organisers’ goal was to create a design that works in harmony with Majej’s while demonstrating the simple, vivid and youthful characteristics of the host city.”
