2015 ACC MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS – DAY 3 PRELIMS

ICYMI:

The Louisville Cardinals had a great morning, giving themselves 12 A final swims and 17 total individual swims. Comparatively, Louisville has one more swim than NC State and two more swims than Virginia Tech.

When you score out tonight’s final session, Louisville has the advantage. We scored out the meet by taking average of each final. Scoring in the middle of the A final, between fourth and fifth place, would be an average of 25.5 points. Following the same pattern, a B final swim is worth roughly 14.5 points and a C final swim is worth roughly 4.5 points. When you do the math, Louisville is set up to score roughly 359 points. That will outscore NC State’s 321 points by 38 and Virginia Tech’s 242 points by 117 points, roughly.

UNC tied Louisville at 17 final swims tonight, going 7 up, 3 mid, and 6 down. They are expected to score roughly 279 points, which is 37 points more than Virginia Tech.

NC State had a great morning yesterday, putting them in a position to dramatically outscore the rest of the field last night. As it stands right now, Louisville will not have enough to catch them. They might, however, be able to catch UNC and maybe Virginia Tech if they swim well tonight and then again tomorrow morning. Based on the scoring predictions from today, diving scores, and the points already earned from days 1 and 2, NC State should take the lead tonight with 816 points, Virginia Tech will fall to second at 800 points, UNC will fall to third at 752, and Louisville will move up to fourth at 697. Granted these are only predictions, but it could set up a very close final day of competition in the battle for second place.

Below is a list of the ups/mids/downs for UofL, VT, and NC State.

Ups/Mids/Downs 400 IM 100 Fly 200 Free 100 Breast 100 Back Totals
Louisville 1/1/0 3/1/0 3/0/1 2/1/1 3/0/0 12/3/2
NC State 2/2/1 1/2/0 3/0/0 1/1/0 2/1/0 9/6/1
Virginia Tech 2/0/0 0/1/1 2/2/0 1/1/1 0/3/1 5/7/3

Below is a full list of the Ups/Mids/Downs for Day 3 and predicted average scores.

  • Louisville – 12/3/2 – 359 points
  • NC State – 9/6/1 – 321 points
  • North Carolina – 7/5/6 – 278 points

UVA has done great on the women, but what do you expect if you look at what UVA has lost in the men:

Alexiou, Webb, Ingraham, Dudzinski, D’Arrigo, Papendick, Marcantonio, not to mention they signed a great British sprinter last year who never showed up on campus.

Thats 7-8 ncaa level guys who would be on the team this year. No one could handle losing that. The question is why have so many men left, yet no women?

We feel you Wahooswimfan, but time to move on. The UVa kids left are doing their best, but frankly that program has had too much talent gutted out.

fast prelims
100 fly prelims – 4 swimmers went 46+ and did not final;
100 breast – 4 swimmers went 53+ and did not final;

I concur, barring the unexpected NCSU is on a path to win, their freestyle group continues to post amazing times.

Battle for 2-4 should be interesting. It’s the Pack without question for 1.

Don’t mean to keep talking UVA but 9th out of 11 teams when it comes to swimming points…? For a team that used to be so dominant. I think we as friends and family of UVA should question if Augie is the right person. He’s doing great with the women’s team – but aren’t they mostly Mark Bernardino’s recruits …not his??

This is all really great for the ACC. Kudos to the Pack.

Tony, so in writing, “could set up a very close final day of competition in the battle for second place”, are you predicting that NC State will be in first and the battle will be for second? Assuming teams keep swimming as they are?

Yes, I don’t see NC State slowing down. Virginia Tech is a very talented team, but I believe don’t have enough this year to stay with NCSU. I think VT has a great shot at holding off UNC and Louisville however. Louisville will need another huge morning like they had today if they want to overtake UNC and/or VT.

This is looking to be a close race for second place…NC State has this meet won hands down. They have been great but not as lights out as last year.

VT are just not as strong as they were last year and Lousiville ruined their chances with their first day performances.

I believe UNC have 7/5/6 not 7/3/9….
