2015 Hancock Prospecting Australian Swimming Championships

The 2015 Hancock Prospecting Australian Swimming Championships got underway today in Sydney, and Swimming Australia streamed the whole thing live on YouTube. The national championship is doubling as a selection meet for both the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia, and the 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.
This is a prelims/semis/finals meet (with the exception of 400 meters and above, as well as IPC events); 16 make it back for semis, while only 8 compete in the final. The first set of prelims included 100 back multi-class, women’s 100 fly, 400 free, women’s 200 IM, men’s 50 fly, and men’s 100 breast.
Women 12 & Over 100 Backstroke Multi-Class
- Title Holder: 1:10.02 – Taylor Corry, 4/4/2014
Ellie Cole (S9) of Castle Hill dropped 2 seconds in prelims, going 1:11.33 to lead the qualifiers for finals in the multi-class 100 back. Defending champion Corry Taylor (S14) of Nelson Bay was just behind in 1:11.41. The two women will be joined in tonight’s final by Richmond Valley’s Jacqueline Freney (S7) (1:28.82); Maddison Elliott (S8) of NU Swim (1:22.06); Teneale Houghton (S15) from Liverpool (1:13.83); 13-year-old Tiffany Thomas Kane (S6) of Ravenswood, who dropped 4 seconds to make the final; Katherine Downie (S10) of Westside Christ Church (1:13.65); and Teigan van Roosmalen (S13) of Mingara (1:15.46).
Men 12 & Over 100 Backstroke Multi-Class
- Title Holder: 1:01.16 – Michael Anderson, 4/4/2014
Top-seeded and defending champion Michael Anderson (S10) of Flinders of Buderim, was just off his seed time with a morning swim of 1:02.10. Daniel Fox (S14) of Chandler went a best time by 2.5 seconds and wound up second in 1:03.85. Jeremy Tidy (S10) of Nunawading was the third qualifier with 1:04.41. 14-year-old Timothy Hodge (S9) dropped a half-second in prelims to post the fourth-fastest time. Brenden Hall (S9) of Lawnton was 1:06.46; Logan Powell (S9) from Cottontree went 1:06.71, a best time by 1.7 seconds; Timothy Disken (S9) of PLC Aquatic was seventh with 1:07.09; and Jesse Aungles (S8) of Marion improved his seed time by 2 seconds to qualify eighth.

Straight out of the chutes, Emma McKeon of Chandler threw down an impressive morning swim in the 100 fly, going top-3 world time of 57.68 to lead the qualifiers. Defending champion Alicia Coutts of Redlands went 58.12 for the second-fastest time of the morning. Brittany Elmslie of St Peters Western was third in 59.29. Elmslie’s teammate, Madeline Groves, who came in with the fastest time, qualified fourth in 59.37.
The top 16 will contest the semi-finals tonight.
Men 400 Freestyle
- Australian: 3:40.08 – 7/30/2002 Ian Thorpe, SLC Aquadot
- Title Holder: 3:43.72 – 4/1/2014 David McKeon, Wests Illawarra
- FINA: 58.44
All eyes were on Miami’s Grant Hackett, wondering what the 34-year-old would look like after a six-year absence. Competing for the first time since Beijing in 2008, Hackett went an impressive 3:49.97 to qualify fourth for tonight’s final.
Defending champion David McKeon of Chandler put up the fastest time of the morning with 3:46.49. 18-year-old Mack Horton of Melbourne Vicentre went 3:48.12 for the second-fastest time, while Jordan Harrison of Miami was third with 3:49.94.
Women’s 200 Individual Medley
- Australian: 2:07.03 – 7/27/2009 Stephanie Rice, St Peters Western
- Title Holder: 2:08.89 – 4/4/2014 Alicia Coutts, Redlands
- FINA: 2:11.21
Emily Seebohm of Brothers led the qualifiers for the semi-finals of the women’s 200 IM, going 2:13.32. The second-fastest morning swim belonged to 16-year-old Lucy McJannett of Bayside, who dropped over 3 seconds in prelims to post a 2:13.62.
Taylor McKeown of Indooroopilly was just off her entry time with a big morning swim of 2:14.03. McKeown had the fastest breaststroke split of the entire field. Ellen Fullerton of Brothers was right at her seed time with the fourth-fastest swim of the morning, 2:14.04. Bronte Barratt of St Peters Western improved her seed time by 3/10 and tied for eighth with 2:15.73.
Men’s 50 Butterfly
- Australian: 22.73 – 7/27/2009 Matt Targett, Melb. Vicentre
- Title Holder: 23.83 – 4/2/2014 Nathaniel Romeo, Sydney Uni
Ryan Pini of Papua New Guinea dropped 7/10 of a second and posted the fastest time (23.85) to lead the men’s 50 fly qualifiers. Commercial’s Jayden Hadler went a tad better than his entry time to qualify second in 23.90. Kenneth To from Trinity Grammar dropped .10 and placed third in 24.16, just .01 ahead of David Morgan from TSS Aquatics. Morgan had a big drop to come in fourth out of the heats with 24.17. Another qualifier was James Magnussen of Ravenswood, who dropped .23 to make top 16 and get another chance to swim in tonight’s semi-finals.
Women’s 400 Freestyle

New Zealand’s Lauren Boyle ticked 6/10 off her seed time and posted the second-best time in the world so far this year, 4:03.88, earning lane 4 for tonight’s final. Leah Neele of Indooroopilly went 4:10.80 to qualify second. Chandler’s Jessica Ashwood went 4:11.27 for third, while Australian record-holder Kylie Palmer of Indooroopilly qualified fourth in 4:11.32.
Men’s 100 Breaststroke
- Australian: 58.58 – 7/27/2009 Brenton Rickard, Brothers
- Title Holder: 58.87 – 4/3/2014 Christian Sprenger, Commercial
- FINA: 59.92
Indooroopilly’s Jake Packard led the field in the men’s 100 breast, qualifying in 1:00.68 for tonight’s semi-final. Christian Sprenger of Commercial was second with 1:00.99. Matthew Treloar from Trinity Grammar came in third (1:01.97), just .01 ahead of Nicholas Schaefer of River City Rapids.

I’m so upset that I missed the first few events, but this was awesome! I LOVED the little section at the bottom to tell viewers which swimmers were in each lane and their times! If I’m not mistaken, Lauren Boyle swam the #2 ranked 400 free this year in prelims!
I agree! That little section is simple and yet very useful, helping us to know which swimmer in which lane.

Hackett swimming a 3:49.. not bad at all.. maybe he can grab something on the 4×200 relay!

Very creditable swim. Is he likely to drop more tonight and/or get anywhere near the QT ? Highly unlikely. Make the 200 final – plausible. Make the relay – not sure he’s currently got a 1.47 in him which is what’ll be needed to be considered.
My early call on these AUS Trials may shock/offend some. Get ready for a surprisingly high number of events where there may be only one or 0 qualifiers !
Even looking at tonight’s events; there is no Barrett or Fiarweather in the W400FS & the times (outside Boyle) are rather pedestrian. Ashwood has a history of swimming faster in the lead-up meets than when it counts.
