Women’s 400 freestyle

Tabitha Baumann posted the fastest qualifying time of the morning in the women’s 400 freestyle. Baumann, who competed in the event at both the Commonwealth Games and Pacific Championships, has a lifetime best of 4:10.68, so look for tonight’s racing to be much faster.

14 year old Taylor Ruck had the next fastest with a time of 4:16.30 which is a lifetime best by over two seconds. Kennedy Goss qualified with the third fastest time of 4:16.37. She was followed by Alexandra Aitchison (4:16.56), Danica Ludlow (4:17.15), Samantha Cheverton (4:17.31), Sycerika McMahon (4:17.76), Brittany MacLean (4:17.92), Emily Overholt (4:18.14) and Samantha Harding (4:18.32).

Men’s 400 freestyle

As you would expect in the men’s 400 freestyle Ryan Cochrane qualified with the fastest prelim time of 3:49.00. This is a typical morning swim for Cochrane, but a little faster than the 2014 trials where he recorded a 3:50.73 and went on to win the event in a time of 3:47.07.

Two Danish swimmers had the next fastest times of the morning. Anders Lie Nielsen posted a 3:52.26 while Anton Oerskov Ipsen recorded a 3:52.41.

Jeremy Bagshaw was the second fastest Canadian in prelims finishing in a time of 3:54.26 followed by Kier Maitland who touched in a time of 3:54.83.

Keegan Zanatta was the next fastest swimmer posting a 3:55.05 followed by Alec Page (3:55.69), Jon McKay (3:55.87), Peter Brothers (3:56.41) and Eric Hedlin (3:56.43).

Women’s 100 butterfly

Noemie Thomas was the fastest qualifier in this mornings women’s 100 butterfly recording a time of 58.08. The time is not far off of her lifetime best of 57.96 which she posted in 2013.

Her time places her fourth in the world rankings.

Canadian record holder Katerine Savard qualified with the second fastest time of the morning hitting the wall in a time of 59.22. She was followed by Audrey Lacroix who touched in a time of 59.39. These three are no strangers to each other finishing one, two, three at last year’s trials where Savard picked up the gold, Lacroix took the silver and Thomas collected the bronze.

Sam Corea qualified with the next fastest time of 59.46 followed by Jacomie Strydom (59.99), Kylie Masse (1:00.07), Paige Miller (1:00.46), Penny Oleksiak (1:00.99), Maggie MacNeil (1:01.18) and Georgia Kidd (1:01.37).

Men’s 100 butterfly

Soeren Dahl of Denmark had the fastest performance of the morning recording a time of 52.71. With that time Dahl bettered his lifetime best of 53.13.

Coleman Allen was the top Canadian of the morning posting a time of 53.15.

Geoff Cheah from Hong Kong had the next fastest swim of the morning finishing in a time of 53.48 followed by Gamal Assaad (53.55), Santo Condorelli (53.61), Mack Darragh (54.13), Andrew Torres (54.32), Alec Page (54.45), Ivan Cocunubo (54.51) and David Williams (54.61).

Women’s 200 backstroke

Hilary Caldwell posted a 209.65 qualifying for the top spot in tonight’s final her time also places her fourth in the world rankings.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist will be challenged tonight by Genevieve Cantin who won the event at last year’s trials and Dominque Bouchard who finished fourth. Bouchard had the second fastest time of the morning touching in a time of 2:10.67 while Cantin qualified fifth with a time of 2:12.66.

Taylor Ruck qualified with the third fastest time and may be a threat as well considering that the 14 year old set a new Canadian age group record of 2:10.22 in January. Sydney Pickrem was the next fastest qualifier posting a 2:12.37.

Meryn McCann qualified in the sixth place spot with a time of 2:12.68 followed by Cynthia Pammett (2:13.87), Barbara Jardin (2:14.28), Danielle Hanus (2:14.33) and Mackenzie Glover (2:15.08).

Men’s 200 backstroke

Russell Wood has had a magnificent competition so far qualifying under the top 16 standard in the 100 backstroke and breaking the Canadian record in the 50 backstroke. Wood was the fastest qualifier in this morning’s 200 backstroke posting a 2:00.24 a second off his lifetime best of 1:59.32. Look for him to have another spectacular swim this evening.

The next two fastest swims of the morning were put up by foreign swimmers. American Hennessey Stuart posted a 2:00.32 while Colombian Omar Pinzon recorded a 2:00.63.

Jeremie Dezwirek was the next fastest Canadian touching in a time of 2:02.13 he was followed by Joe Byram (2:02.83), Anders Klein (2:02.87), Yuri Kisil (2:03.89), Markus Thormeyer (2:03.96), Javier Acevedo (2:04.09) and Matthew Mac (2:04.27).

Women’s 50 breaststroke

The fastest two women in the prelims were American and Irish. Breeja Larson posted a 31.34 followed by Fiona Doyle who recorded a 31.37.

100 breaststroke champion Rachel Nicol was the top Canadian hitting the wall in a time of 31.47 she was followed by Marie-Solei Jean-Lachapelle (31.89), Rebecca Terejko (31.99), Tera Van Beilen (32.16), Sycerika McMahon (32.27), Tianna Rissling (32.29), Kayla Brumbaum (32.43) and Mariya Chekanovych (32.52).

Men’s 50 breaststroke

For the second event in a row the top two performances were posted by foreign athletes. Peter Stevens of Slovenia posted a 27.45 while American Mark Conroy recorded a 27.74. Both men’s times put them in the top five in the world rankings.

Stevens in second and Conroy tied for fifth with Cameron van der Burgh.

Richard Funk was the fastest Canadian qualifier posting a time of 27.88 which places him 10th in the world rankings.

Konrad Bald was the next fastest qualifier touching in a time of 28.43 he was followed by Jason Block (28.45), Zac Hayden (28.56), Andrew Poznikoff (28.59), Nick Kostiuk (28.62), Brad Craig (28.72) and Jonathan Naisby (28.78).
