2015 Canadian Trials: Russell Wood Scares Canadian Record In 100 Back

Russell Wood took home a national title in the 100m backstroke yesterday at the 2015 Canadian Trials after swimming a great prelim session and improving once again in finals.

Wood bettered his entry time of 54.71 with a 54-low in prelims, and then for the first time ever dipped under that 54 second barrier in finals to post a time of 53.96.

That time put him three-tenths of a second away from Pascal Wollach’s national record of 53.66.

Today, Wood took the top seed heading into the finals of the 50 backstroke by over seven-tenths of a second with a time of 25.34. The closest swimmer to him in prelims was Jeffrey Swanston of Newmarket who rocked a 26.04.

Wood will be swimming the 200 backstroke on Friday where he’s entered as the top seed.
