The 2015 FINA World Cup Series is unique because the athletes will be competing in a 50 meter poor rather than the series’ traditional 25 meter pool.
Today marks the start of the second stop of the 2015 World Cup Series and will be the last meet of the first cluster. In addition to the normal prize money available, there will also be an addition $300,000 split between the top 6 male and top 6 female finishers after the first two meets.

Men’s 100 Freestyle
Mehdy Metella rocked the first event of the night, winning the 100 freestyle in his home country with a time of 48.69. Jeremy Stravius also earned a top three finish in his home country with a 48.93 for third.
Josh Schneider finished in second with a 48.91.
Women’s 200 Freestyle
It didn’t take long for Katinka Hosszu to win her first event of the meet. Hosszu ran away with the women’s 200 freestyle, touching the wall at 1:56.06.
Missy Franklin finished second with a 1:57.28 and Charlotte Bonnet finished exactly one second behind her with a 1:58.28 for third.
Men’s 50 Breaststroke
Cameron Van Der Burgh maintained his speed from the World Championships last week, winning the men’s 50 breaststroke with a 26.74. Brendan McHugh finished second at 27.61 and Renato David Prono Fernandez finished third at 27.76.

Bobo, what about the US Olympic Open Water Team?
If I am understanding correctly, the open water team for Rio was just selected at World’s, so no predictions are necessary. Haley Anderson, Jordan Wilimovsky, and Sean Ryan made the Olympic team.
I guess nobody was picking Phelps to make the Sydney Olympics either during the summer of 1999. It wouldn’t surprise me if Whitley makes the plane for Rio.

Fink went 2:08.8 and 59.5 this week (and one more race to go). Bobo didn’t pick him. I understand they are Bobo’s picks. He will probably change his mind a few times between now and next July 4th. We all have our favorites and our darkhorses. He is just brave enough to print them for everyone to see. If you have your list of who you think will make the team, go ahead and commit to it for all of us to see.
If you publish it now, you should have to stick to it for the next year.
if what “weirdo” says is accurate and even if you are top 12 in the world but usa swimming only gives out certain number of stipend checks = even though lochte and phelps earned them
why would usa swimming give them stipend checks when they have millions in the bank and others much lower in earning chain – would need that money
Not everyone takes them. It comes with some responsibilites. I don’t think Phelps takes his. Not sure about Ryan et al.

That is an impressive list of predictions! I like your confidence in Dana Vollmer making the team. Also like your prediction for Natalie Coughlin making the 100 back and 100 free relay. I sure would like to see Tom Shields make the 2nd slot in the 100 fly. Now that Grand Prix is long course, maybe that racing will give him the LCM confidence and boost he needs to make it.
Walsh has a chance in 100 back also if missy doesn’t come to her old self again, she has dropped tons of time and as she gets older and stronger she could break 1:00 next summer..
On the women, Weitzeil didn’t get a good taper meet this summer hope she breaks through and I think she will but natalie will take the second 50 spot. How about a spot for Melanie Margolis? Some of these second spots are really wide open for competition like the 100 breast but I guess u have to pick somebody to finish the list
On the men, how about conger in the 100/200 relay spots? Shields in the 100 fly I think it’s a lock but sure it will be tight. The Whitley pick I don’t think you are serious there but it’s ok to have some fun with the list. At the bottom u should put an honorable mention list of those that are just missing the qualification that way you hedge your bets and give more discussion
Thanks for the list, Bobo. It’s fun to see. I have my fingers crossed for Cierra Runge, although based on her swims this year, I wouldn’t have predicted her to make the Olympic team either. I’m excited to see Katie Ledecky cracked your 100 free list! I noticed that Missy Franklin didn’t make your top two for the 100 free. Even if she qualified in the top two, I wonder whether she would decline an individual spot in the 100 free since it seems increasingly like the individual event in which she is least likely to medal.
