2015 U.S. Worlds Team Qualifiers: All Non-Olympic Swimmers Qualify After Pan Pacs

While the official 2015 World Championship rosters won’t be finalized by USA Swimming until October 1st, after the completion of Sunday’s swimming at the 2014 Pan Pacs, we can at least tell you who is entitled to the roster spots.

All of the non-Olympic event swimmers, plus the 5th and 6th place swimmers in the 100 and 200 freestyle, have qualified through.

The results of the A finals at U.S. Nationals, plus the A and B finals at Pan Pacs, will be combined, and the top swimmers will go on to Kazan, Russia next summer in the following order:

  • Priority 1: Top 4 athletes in 100 and 200 free, top 1 athlete in each Olympic event added to team
  • Priority 2: 2nd athlete in each Olympic event added to the team
  • Priority 3: Top 1 athlete in each non-Olympic event (50 back/breast/fly, men’s 800 free, women’s 1500 free) added
  • Priority 4: 5th athlete in 100 and 200 free added
  • Priority 5: 6th athlete in 100 and 200 free added

There’s a lot of caveats to these rules, so below we’ve done our best to boil them down to a simple table.

  • A yellow box means a swimmer has earned an individual swim in that event.
  • A bright orange box means a swimmer has earned a relay swim in that event.
  • All non-Olympic event winners from Nationals have qualified, with spots left to spare.

There’s one tab for men, and one tab for women. Scroll to the right on the tab, and you will see a listing of who’s qualified, to simplify things.

Thanksf or that information, Floppy, I’ll be interested to see how many of those invited athletes attend!

I just wanted to say that, with a few minor exceptions, I think the US pretty much got the best LCM World Team possible! If I were being picky, I would have liked to see Larson in the 100 breast (because her PR is better), McLean in the 400 free (to encourage this talented guy with an individual swim), Mann in the 1500 (her best event), Coughlin, Romano and Schmitt at least in relay alternate roles (because we know what they’re capable of, and to add experience), and of course, Cordes in the 100 breast (no offense intended to Lawrence, McBroom, Campbell, Miller… Read more »

The Men’s 2014 SCM World Champs invited team:
(also worth noting only 4 swimmers are taken in the relays, not 6)

Adrian – 50,100 free, 4×100 FR.
Ervin – 50 free
Phelps – 100 free, 50,100 fly, 100,200 IM, 4×100 FR
Feigen – 4×100 FR
Lochte – 200 free, 100,200 IM, 4×100,4×200 FR
Dwyer – 200 free, 4×200 FR
Malone – 4×200 FR
McLean – 4×200 FR
Jaeger – 400,1500 free
McBroom – 400,1500 free
Grevers – 50,100 back (will likely swim Phelps’ 50 fly)
Plummer – 50,100 back
Murphy – 200 back
Clary – 200 back, 200 fly, 400 IM
Shields – 50,100,200 fly… Read more »

I believe the 2014 SCM World Championship is also selected, unless someone busts out a swim in the next week.

Slightly different criteria (all LCM meets count this year, provided the swim was done in finals – also, non-Olympic events are only filled by swimmers who qualified in Olympic events). Before scratches (might be a few since America never sends an ‘A’ team to SCM Worlds), the team should look like:
Manuel – 50, 100 free, 4×100 FR
I Martin – 50 free
Franklin – 100, 200 free, 50, 100, 200 back, all three relays.
Vreeland – 4×100 FR
Weitzeil – 4×100 FR
SCHMITT – 4×200 FR (Her 1:56.90 from Mesa Grand Prix qualifies)***… Read more »

It would be nice if teams could enter 3+ swimmers in each event. A 1-2-3 medal sweep would still be extremely rare (I doubt there would be any). If the smaller countries protest, there could be a Pan-Pacs-ish 2-per-final rule.

Or, the US could NOT pick their team a year out, from only two races done in outdoor pools.

For stroke 50’s First refusal goes to the winner of that stroke 100 if it’s a different person; second refusal goes to the second place person in that stroke 100 if it’s a different person. If neither of those people wants to swim the stroke 50, it’s officially ‘coach’s decision selected from the pool of swimmers with an A standard in the event’. In past WCs, there have been times when coach’s decision has made perfect sense (Missy Franklin ending up with the second 50 back spot in 2011 and then picking up bronze) and times it’s felt like people player rock-paper-scissors to see who got the swim.

Make that swimmers with an A standard who are already part of the World Championships team in other events.

Thanks for the explanation! So it sounds like Tom Shields will have the option to swim a third individual event (I doubt Phelps would want it), as well as Grevers on the men’s side (he’s already in the 50 fly).

It would be nice if Miller and Larson could swim the 50 breast, because all of the other breastrokers will have 2 individuals and I assume a prelims or finals relay swim, but I guess first refusal would go to Fink and Lawrence. I doubt Franklin will want to do the 50 back, so I guess Baker will get a second individual swim, and I it’s likely Donohue will join Stewart for the 50 fly.

I guess we’ll have… Read more »

So, is the guy who can’t swim the 100 breast individually because of his times being in PRELIMS OF THE BIGGEST MEETS OF THE YEAR going to swim the medley relay in finals? Either of these other boys go sub 58 in a relay split yet? At what point do you change/tweak the way you select this team? I would think leaving your #1 male BR out of the 100 breast might cause som change.

Is this all because USA Swimming wants to keep US Open where it is in August in 2015, only changing the time of your National Championship in Olympic years versus World Champ years as well? That is only thing that makes sense to have a… Read more »

I would guess Fink will get a prelims Medley Relay swim (unless Miller beats him in Russia, in which case that chance will go to him) to try to knock Cordes out of the final with a faster split, but no, I don’t think Cordes will replace Miller in the 100 breast individually unless Miller breaks his leg or doesn’t want to go to Kazan! Whether that’s the “best” decision or not I don’t think there will be much discussion about it, even among the World Team Coaches.

The justification is, in part, that it gives elite swimmers a longer, unbroken block to train in the two years leading up to the Olympics. Don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone ever saying it has anything to do with the timing of the US Open.

And I thought that the worlds spot in the 1500 would go to katie ledecky because she had the fastest time between pan pacs and nationals and then probably becca Mann as she was second in the 800. Does Katy Campbell get it solely based off winning nationals even though katie and cierra runge were faster at pan pacs?

I don’t know why it isn’t included on the spreadsheet. Based on my understanding of the rules Ledecky has the spot in the 1500. The second spot will likely be offered to Mann.

Klorn8d … from my interpretation of Priority #3 (possibly incorrect?), Katy Campbell gets the top slot in the 1500 free for Worlds by virtue of her winning time from Nationals, 16:17.59. Neither Ledecky’s 15:28.36 WR nor Runge’s 16:04.48 from Pan Pacs finals will be considered for selection.

It’s also my understanding that the 2nd swimmer selected will be whoever has the highest FINA ranking in the event AND is also already on the Worlds roster in another event.

If this is true, we should at least get to see Katie Ledecky contest the 1500 in Kazan, phew! 😉

However, with all due respect to Campbell’s very fine performance in dropping more than 25 seconds from her seed… Read more »

If that is the case bystander I have two questions:

1. What exactly was the purpose and intent of this rule when both the women’s 1500 and men’s are contested at Pan Pacs. The stroke 50s are not so it only makes logical sense that only winners from Nationals are considered.

2. If a World Championship berth was on the line why did so many swimmers scratch it?

Of course, I have no proof that this is true, but I suspect Mann and Runge, who had already qualified for the Pan Pac Team and were having a good meet, scratched to give their friend and training partner Gillian Ryan a better chance to win and make the World Team in the 1500, her best event. She did not swim her best, but I believe she was the highest ranked US woman swimming the event, so there was reason for them to hope she would.

As far as Katie goes, I suspect, and I may be completely wrong, but I suspect it was her plan to make the Pan Pac 1500 free her last for awhile. At last… Read more »
