2016 Canadian Championships: Day 2 Prelims Recap

2016 CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Day two of the Canadian Swimming Championships has commenced this morning in Edmonton, Alberta with six different events on tap: the 200 free, 50 fly, 100 back, 400 IM, 50 breast and the mixed 400 medley relay.

Women’s 200m Free Prelims

Last night’s 800 free runner-up Danica Ludlow blew away the field in the women’s 200 free this morning, posting the top time of 2:01.79 to separate herself from the field by over two seconds. Ludlow improved her lead-off time from the 800 free relay (that her and her Island Swimming teammates won) by almost a full second. Her teammate and fellow member of that winning 800 free relay Mackenzie Padington led a group of six swimmers who went 2:04 this morning, seeded 2nd after her 2:04.06. Padington also picked up a bronze last night in the 200 breast.

3rd seed Rebecca Smith (2:04.24) was 4th in the 50 free last night, and two other event winners from last night advanced to the final of this event: Meryn McCann (200 back winner) and Kelsey Wog (200 breast winner). Both are seeded 7th and 8th respectively.

Jeremy Bagshaw of Island Swimming led the way in the men’s 200 free heats, clocking 1:50.14 for the top seed. Look for Bagshaw to be much faster tonight, as he owns a best of 1:47.48 from 2015. Carson Olafson, who anchored UBC’s winning 800 free relay last night, posted the 2nd fastest time in 1:50.91, five one-hundredths better than he was last night on the relay. Two of his teammates from that relay, Stefan Milosevic and Jonathan Brown, also advanced to the final placing 4th and 5th this morning respectively. Island Swimming’s Peter Brothers was 3rd this morning in 1:51.72, fresh off a win in the 1500 free last night.

Women’s 50m Fly Prelims

Maggie MacNeil of the London Aquatic Club posted the top time in the women’s 50 fly with a 27.60, followed by Marie-Lou Lapointe of CAMO (27.66) and Christina Russo of the Liquid Lightning Swim Club (27.95). The only woman seeded under 27 coming into the event, Paige Kremer, qualified 4th in 27.96 and will be in contention for the win if she can close in on her personal best of 26.92

Men’s 50m Fly Prelims

UBC’s Luke Peddie paced the men’s 100 fly field this morning with a 24.74. Samuel Wang and Gamal Assaad were the only others under 25 seconds, clocking 24.93 and 24.95 respectively. Last night’s 50 free winner Karl Krug qualified 7th in 25.35.

Women’s 100m Back Prelims

Mackenzie Glover led the women’s 100 back prelims with a time of 1:01.94, followed by Danielle Hanus (1:02.66) and Ingrid Wilm (1:03.22). All three swam in the 200 back final last night, with Glover finishing 3rd, Wilm 7th and Hanus 8th. Coming into this race these three were among the top four seeds, with #2 seed Alexia Zevnik back in 9th in 1:04.51 this morning.

Last night’s 200 back winner Rob Hill grabbed the definitive top seed this morning in the men’s 100 back, clocking a time of 55.98. That swim put him over a second ahead of the rest of the field, with teammate Tim Zeng seeded 2nd in 57.20. Zeng leads a group of eight men who went 57 this morning, leading to what looks like a close race for 2nd. Hill’s best time is 55.57 from the Olympic Trials. Noah Choboter, who qualified 8th in 57.83, also holds a best time under 56 at 55.78.

Women’s 400m IM Prelims

Oakville’s Tessa Cieplucha posted the top time of the morning in 4:54.08, followed by three other women under five minutes: Megan DalkeMary-Sophie Harvey and Sarah-Lee Hevey. Look for Cieplucha and Harvey, who own best times of 4:44 and 4:45, to drop time and battle for the win tonight.

Men’s 400 IM Prelims

Tristan Cote of Etobicoke led the men’s 400 IM prelims in 4:26.52, followed by Jeremy Tremblay (4:27.58) and Luke Reilly (4:29.34). Reilly, who owns a best time of 4:15.86, will be the favorite tonight in the final. Rob Hill (4:30.24) qualified 5th shortly after claiming the top seed in the 100 back.

Women’s 50 Breast Prelims

200 breast winner Kelsey Wog posted a time of 31.55 to take the top seed in the women’s 50 breast, followed by 50 free third place finisher Sarah Fournier who was 2nd in 31.96. 200 breast runner-up Ashley McGregor qualified 4th in 32.43

Pan Am medalist Richard Funk posted the top time in the men’s 50 breast prelims in 28.17, followed by Nick Kostiuk (28.49) of Edmonton Keyano and Jonathan Naisby (28.81) of Sherbrooke. 200 breast 1-2 finishers James Dergousoff and James Guest qualified 4th and 5th respectively.

Mixed 400m Medley Relay Prelims

Edmonton Keyano, Pointe-Claire, Oakville and C.N. St. Jerome all put multiple teams into the final of the mixed medley relay, with Edmonton’s ‘A’ squad posting the top time of the morning in 4:02.80 with Nick Kostiuk (1:03.08) producing a fast breaststroke split. The top ten teams will swim this again in finals.
