Santa Margarita girls and Loyola boys jumped out to huge leads in prelims of the CIF-Southern Section Division I prelims on Thursday. Even after the graduation of Katie McLaughlin the Santa Margarita girls have enough strength and depth to lead the field by over 50 points, with at least one scorer in ever event. Woodbridge will score in everything but diving, and sit alone at number 2, more than 60 points ahead of the rest of the field. Edison was expected to be in the mix for number 3, but a difficult morning dropped them out of contention for the top slots.
The Loyola boys were expected to rise to take over the void filled by graduations at University; they did just that and then some. Outscoring the psych sheet by 80 points in prelims, Loyola put themselves out of reach of the rest of the teams. Santa Margarita had an excellent morning and now sit within just a few points of second-place Dana Hills.
Girls’ Meet
Santa Margarita sophomore Samantha Shelton and Woodbridge junior Kate Krolikowski kicked off the girls meet with nearly identical qualifying times in the 200 free, going 1:47.14 and 1:47.17, respectively. Shelton was also the fastest 100 butterflier with 54.37, while Krolikowski led the 500 free qualifiers with 4:48.77.
JSerra junior Katie Glavinovich was second in the 500 free and topped the field in the 200 IM (2:01.07). Edison sophomore Nora Deleske was second in the 200 IM (2:01.08) and second in the 100 breast (1:02.44). Top billing in the breaststroke went to Alicia Harrison of Ventura (1:01.56).
Alemany senior Katherine Wagner was about a half-second faster than the field in the 50 free (22.73) and 100 free (49.41). Santa Margarita freshman Mackenzie Degn was the second qualifier in both sprint frees (23.27 and 49.92). Foothill senior Courtney Mykkanen put up the morning’s fastest time in the 100 back (54.27).
