You missed the MVC – Women. Taking place in Week 2 at Edward Shea Natatorium, Carbondale, IL
Not anytime soon, in fact, you’re more likely to see more teams dropped in the next decade than you are added – especially now that they are reviewing the Division I sports sponsorship rules (people I’ve talked to suggest 10 as the new number, down from 14 w/o football and 16 w/ football). I would imagine teams in the Big Ten, ACC, and Pac-12 are going to be relatively secure since those conferences as a whole value having large numbers of teams, but the SEC (maybe not for swimming, but placed against the desires of football who knows), Big 12, C-USA, AAC, Sun Belt, and more cash-strapped departments in smaller conferences that are already on the lower boundaries of sport… Read more »
The SEC has more money than anyone.
And they’d rather spend it on football, men’s basketball, and baseball than pay for one extra snorkel. As I said, SEC swimming might be the exception simply because it’s proven to be so successful, but if, say, Vanderbilt has the option between continuing to get destroyed year after year in swimming, or pay an extra 250K to get that new football coach … well, you’ll never have to worry about Nashville pool water again.
The SEC has the most well funded athletic departments man. If all they cared about is football then why do they dominate gymastics, softball, and baseball? There are 4 top 10 men’s swimming programs in the SEC.
SEC women’s swimming is even more dominant.
A sports funding financial crisis is the least of the worries of SEC schools.
Georgia Men?
I wonder when some of these schools in the Power 5 conferences are going to do the right thing and use some of
the football money and re-instate their men’s/women’s swim teams. Maryland and UCLA immediately come to mind. I’m sure there are many others that were cut for monetary reasons that should now be affordable with all of the football money that is being distributed.
I could be wrong but I thought Maryland’s program was cut due to title ix? Unless it was to make more room for football?
My understanding is that Maryland cut both of their men and women’s team, so this was not obviously due to title ix pressures.
U of MD suffers from not having had much swim talent within a 45-60 minute drive from College Park over the years. I can’t think of anyone in the nearby area who might have ended up there had a strong program been in place*. Probably for the best they cut both programs given the lack of local talent and interest in swimming.
