2016 German National Championships, day 2 prelims live recap

Short reminder of German Olympic qualification procedure: The 2016 German National Championships are the first part of a two-step nomination procedure for the Olympic Games. The athletes had to swim defined times at National Championships in prelims and in finals. All swimmers who achieve the times will be part of the so-called “long list” and must inform German Head Coach Henning Lambertz in the period of one week after German Nationals in which meet they want to confirm the required performance of the nomination process: at one of the three meets of the Mare Nostrum tour or the German Open. They can only choose ONE of these four possibilities. For this meet, other times are set which are approximately 1,5 % slower than those at German nationals. All swimmers who reach the times and have also finished first or second at the German National Championships will qualify for Rio.

This is today’s morning schedule – less Olympic events, only the 400 m freestyle. But: a lot of swimmers start with a non-olympic 50 m event to get into the competition:

Women’s 50m backstroke

Johanna Roas, who is an athletic Student at the University of Denver, USA, posted the fastest time in 28,62 followed by Jenny Mensing in 29,04 and Lisa Graf in 29,04. (This is the intermediate result after the three fastest heats.)

Men’s 50m backstroke

These guys are the fastest backstrokers in Germany in the 100 m and 200 m distances and will fight stroke for stroke on Saturday and Sunday for the win and the nomination times: Jan-Philip Glania clocked 25,05 in the non-olympic 50 backstroke, followed by Christian Diener with a time of 25,51 and Diener’s teammate  Carl Louis Schwarz in 25,63. Diener is the 2014 silver medalist in the 200 m backstroke at the European Championships.

Women’s 50m breaststroke

Also the fastest German ladies in the breaststroke events took the chance to get some race experience in and competed in the breaststroke sprint distance: Vanessa Grimberg finished in 31,71.  Laura Simon who lives, trains and studies in the USA at the University of Virginia went 31,73. Alice Ruhnau posted a 31,87 followed by her sister Caroline Ruhnau in 00:32,25 and Jessica Steiger in 32,45.

Men’s 50m breaststroke

It is the morning of the US based German athletic students: NCAA gold medalist Fabian Schwingenschloegl finished in 27,68 – Schwingenschloegel is an athletic student in Missouri. The third fastest time this morning was set by Nils Wich-Glasen, who studies at the University of South Carolina, in 28,09. Erik Steinhagen was the second fastest swimmer in the prelims in 27,90.

Nomination times – Prelims 4:13,43 Finals 4:09,08

In yesterday’s 800 m freestyle final, Sarah Köhler swam a 4:09,23 on the first 400 – she finished the 800 m in 8:22,80 – that is the fourth fastest time in the world in 2016.

Three swimmers went under the prelims nomination time in the 400 m free: Antonia Massone in 4:12,23, Johanna Friedrich in 4.11,55 and Sarah Köhler in 4:11,11.

Jacob Heidtmann, who won the 400 IM yesterday, swam the German fastest time in 2016 in 3:48,25. World record holder Paul Biedermann does not compete in this event. Heidtmann also scratched the 400 m Freestyle today.

Fastest in the morning heats under olympic nomination time was Florian Vogel in 3:46,31 and also Clemens Rapp took the first hurdle in the nomination procedure  in 3:49,29.

Women’s 50m butterfly women

The fastest sprint “butterflies” in the morning heats are Aliena Schmidtke in 1992 26,38, Dorothea Brandt in 26,41 and Alexandra Wenk in 26,74.

Men’s 50m butterfly men

Björn Hornikel, who graduated at the University of Alabama, and Steffen Deibler both clocked 24,17, only Damian Wierling was faster in 24,16.

15-year old Luca Nik Armbruster set a new age group record in 24,84.
