Day 2 of the Japan Open will feature the 400 IM, 50 fly, 50 breast, 400 free, 200 back, and 100 free. Big names on the men’s side include Kosuke Hagino and Daiya Seto in the 400 IM and Cameron McEvoy in the 400 and 100 free. Seto will also swim the 200 back along with Japanese record holder Ryosuke Irie. The highlight on the women’s side will be Cate Campbell and Bronte Campbell in the women’s 100 freestyle.

Sakiko Shimizu paced the women’s 400 IM prelims by over four seconds, clocking a time of 4:40.31. Miho Takahashi sits 2nd in 4:44.46, and Haruka Ueda is 3rd in 4:44.61. The swimmer who finished 8th had an ineligible translation on the result file.

Japanese record holder Kosuke Hagino dominated the men’s 400 IM prelims putting up a time of 4:11.48 to qualify over seven seconds ahead of 2nd place Tomoya Yokohama who was 4:18.62. Two time defending world champion Daiya Seto qualified 3rd overall in 4:20.29

Kanako Watanabe backed up her 100m winner on day 1 with the top time in the 50 breast prelims in 31.58. Big names Satomi Suzuki (31.74) and Rie Kaneto (31.98) qualified 3rd and 5th respectively, and will be dangerous come the final.

The quality of breaststroke in Japan was on display in the men’s 50 breast prelims, with the top four qualifiers all under 28 seconds and 5th through 8th all in the 28.07 to 28.15 range. 200 breast specialist Yasuhiro Koseki was among the top qualifiers, 3rd in 27.76.

Joshua Beaver of Australia put up the top time in prelims with a 1:59.31, but three more men cracked two minutes as well. National record holder Ryosuke Irie and Daiya Seto tied for 2nd in 1:59.71, and Masaki Kaneko was 4th in 1:59.86

Australian Cate Campbell dominated the prelims qualifying over a full second ahead of the next closest swimmer, her sister Bronte. Cate went 53.06 while Bronte was 54.27 for 2nd. Ike Ko Ko was 3rd in 54.60, and Shayna Jack was the third Australian in the top-8, finishing 5th in 55.39.

Australians dominated the men’s 100 free, with five of the top eight coming from the land down under. Cameron McEvoy led the way with a very impressive 47.88, James Magnussen was 2nd in 48.52, and Kenneth To was a solid 49.77 for 4th. Masaru Nakamura (49.34) was the top Japanese swimmer in 3rd.
Hard to read these results. Japanese names in Japanese. And the foreign swimmers (non Japanese) are not ranked. 🙄

Only 48.17 for McEvoy. Weird. He was fresher than in prelims with no 400 free just before.
