After dropping out of the Brazil Open halfway through and later deciding to scratch the 100 free finals here at the Maria Lenk Trophy Cesar Cielo is back, posting a 21.99 to notch the top slot in the men’s 50 free. He now sits tenth in the world

Italo Duarte, Marcelo Chierighini, and Canada’s Santo Condorelli also came in under the FINA ‘A’ cut. Duarte finished in 22.16, while Chierighini and Condorelli each hit 22.22.

Given the results from the Brazil Open, Cielo’s spot on the team is still on thin ice. Currently Bruno Fratus, who finished sixth this morning in 22.35, is the top qualifier with his 21.50 from the Brazil Open. Fratus went even faster in a relay lead-off at that meet, a 21.37, but that swim doesn’t count for Olympic qualification.

While Fratus, currently first in the world, is relatively safe, Cielo will have to fend off his challengers, Duarte and Chierghini, to hold his spot on the team. If either (or anyone else in the field) beats Cielo’s 21.99 and Cielo doesn’t, then that swimmer is the second qualifier.

Etiene Medeiros lowered her season best this morning, hitting the ‘A’ cut yet again and moving up into the world rankings at 22nd in 24.84. Her time today was even faster than her Brazil Open 25.28.

Lorrane Cristina scored her first FINA ‘A’ cut, coming in second with 25.06, and Graciele Herrmann came in third with 25.35.

Including the results from the Brazil Open, the Olympic qualifiers are currently Medieros with her 24.84 from this morning and Herrmann with her 24.92 from the Brazil Open. In order to make the team, Cristina will have to knock one or both of them down, breaking 25 tonight and coming in faster than 24.92.

Vinicius Lanza scored a FINA ‘A’ cut this morning in the 100 fly, swimming the event in 52.14. Thiago Pereira,who qualified in the 200 IM yesterday, missed the mark, but he will have another chance tonight. Argentine national record holder Santiago Grassi hit third in 52.68, followed by Henrique Martins in 52.71.

Although Lanza swam an ‘A’ cut, he will have to go even faster tonight to make the team. At the Brazil Open, Martins and Marcos Macedo swam faster, finishing in 52.14 and 52.17, respectively. Tonight, Lanza will have fend off his challengers (mostly Pereira) and cut another five hundredths to earn his spot on the Olympic team.

It is highly unlikely that any Brazilian women will make the Olympics in the 200 back. The first qualifier this morning was Yifan Yang of China, who finished the event in 2:14.97. Natalia de Luccas will be the second seed tonight, coming in with 2:16.55, followed by Beatriz Silva in 2:17.59.
