Division II Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships

Women’s 200-yard Freestyle Relay

  • NCAA DII: 1:30.57 3/12/2015 Drury

Wayne State’ 1:32.45 led the way in the prelims of the women’s 200 free relay over a very tight field, with the top eight qualifiers all coming within a second of each other. Freshman Lezlie Bueno Estrada led off in 23.47 for the Warriors. She was followed by junior Emily Heitchue (23.08), sophomore Makayla Myers (22.92), and senior Ellyson Maleski (22.98).

UC San Diego qualified second in 1:32.53, just ahead of Wingate (1:32.67).

Men’s 200-yard Freestyle Relay

  • NCAA DII: 1:18.89 3/12/2015 Wayne State

Tampa came roaring out of the blocks and smashed the NCAA Division II record right away. Junior Martin Hammer (19.67) and seniors Jordan Augier (19.43), Khalid Aldaboos (19.57), and Jeremy Parker (19.11) left the rest of the field in their wake with a huge 1:17.78, more than 1.1 seconds under the old mark established by Wayne State at this meet last year. Hammer had split 19.16 coming home on the end of Tampa’s 200 medley relay last night, and now the Spartans showed they have two sprinters capable of going 19.1 with Parker’s anchor this morning.

Drury went 1:19.90 for second; Lindenwood was third in 1:20.26. While there were no DQs it is worth noting that Queens failed to make the A final, qualifying ninth in 1:20.84.

Women’s 400-yard Individual Medley

  • NCAA DII: 4:14.00 3/10/2011 Casey Hurrell-Zitelman, Incarnate Word

Queens senior Patri Castro Ortega did it again and started Day Two much as she had Day One: she came right out and immediately took down the NCAA record. Castro Ortega went 4:12.47 in prelims to lower the mark of 4:14.00 set in 2011 by just over 1.5 seconds. Teammate Caroline Arakelian dropped a 4:19.31 to qualify second for tonight’s final.

Sofia Petrenko of Wingate was the third qualifier in 4:20.39, off her seed time of 4:17.60 but solidly positioned in the middle lanes for the final. Lynn senior Rebecca Matthews qualified fourth in 4:20.45. Petrenko and Matthews finished third and fourth in last night’s 200 IM final behind Castro Ortega and Arakelian.

Lindenwood junior Alecia McGillivray (4:21.86), Drury senior Gretchen Stein (4:22.82), Grand Valley sophomore Samantha Postmus (4:23.15), and Delta State junior Melanie Tombers (4:23.61) will make up the rest of the championship final.

Men’s 400-yard Individual Medley

  • NCAA DII: 3:43.84 3/12/2015 Nick Arakelian, Queens (NC)

Defending champion and NCAA record-holder Nick Arakelian led the qualifiers with 3:44.58, less than a second off his meet record from last year’s championship. Lindenwood freshman Cristian Vasquez was second in 3:50.66, followed closely by Truman State sophomore Will Shanel in 3:50.89.

Lindenwood, who is in a tight race with Queens for the men’s team title, placed two swimmers in the 400 IM A final as junior Felix Eigel qualified fourth with 3:51.69. Northern Michigan freshman Ryan Leonard (3:52.16) qualified fifth, followed by Cal Baptist senior Joshua Hanson (3:52.46), NSU junior Marco Aldabe (3:52.88), and West Chester junior Michael Oliver (3:53.33).

Women’s 100-yard Butterfly

  • NCAA DII: 52.42 3/12/2015 Armony Dumur, Wingate

Defending champion and NCAA record-holder Armony Dumur cracked a 53.36 in prelims to lead the field, but not by much. Both Joyce Kwok, a senior at LIU Post and last year’s runner-up, and West Florida junior Theresa Michalak were under 54 seconds as well, with 53.42 and 53.78, respectively.

Queens junior Hannah Peiffer, who finished fourth in this event last year, qualified in the number four position with 54.40. UC San Diego placed two seniors into the A final: Darielle Watkins went 54.55 for fifth, improving her seed time by 8/10, and Naomi Thomas swam 54.81 to qualify seventh. Fresno Pacific sophomore Daria Belova (54.79) and Drury sophomore Vera Johansson (54.83) also made top eight.

Men’s 100-yard Butterfly

2015 runner-up Gianni Ferrero of Grand Valley State, coming off a silver-medal performance in the 200 IM last night, was the top qualifier in the men’s 100 fly with 46.56. GVSU went 1-2 in the morning session, with sophomore Gabriel Souza clocking a 47.21 to set himself up in lane 5 next to the senior Ferrero in tonight’s final. Saint Leo senior Pawel Trenda, seventh in this event last year, was the third-fastest qualifier in 47.24.

Florida Southern senior Edson Lima (47.43), UCSD sophomore Kevin Wylder (47.51), Lindenwood sophomore Krzysztof Jankiewicz (47.56), Findlay sophomore Janko Radmanovic (47.82), and Drury senior Stanislav Kuzmin (47.84) will make for an exciting championship final tonight, all qualifying within .41 of each other.

Women’s 200-yard Freestyle

NSU junior Emma Wahlstrom improved her seed time by 2.2 seconds to qualify at the top of the pack for tonight’s 200 free final in 1:47.89. She was nearly 2 full seconds faster than her sixth-place finish in this final in 2015. Leonie Van Noort, runner-up in the 1000 free on Day One, qualified second with 1:48.67, just in front of UCSD senior Darielle Watkins (1:48.77).

Queens sophomore Mckenzie Stevens, who placed fourth in 2015, qualified next with 1:49.23, just .08 ahead of her freshman teammate Josephina Lorda (1:49.31). Western State Colorado freshman Miranda Yarnell came in at sixth in 1:50.01. She was followed by UC San Diego junior Natalie Tang (1:50.08) and Carson-Newman sophomore Margaret Stansberry (1:50.10).

Top-seeded Dion Dreesens of Queens led the field in the men’s 200 free with 1:35.43. The next seven qualifiers all came to the wall within .72 of each other. They include West Chester junior Victor Polyakov (1:36.20), Wingate sophomore Jerome Heidrich (1:36.34), Simon Fraser sophomore Adrian VanderHelm (1:36.39), defending champion Thiago Sickert of Nova Southeastern (1:36.42), Ben Taylor of Queens (1:36.50), and a tie for seventh from Drury junior Daniel Rzadkowski and Missouri S&T senior Keith Sponsler (1:36.92).

Women’s 400-yard Medley Relay

  • NCAA DII: 3:39.29 3/13/2014 Drury

The NCAA record-holder Drury Panthers won’t have the opportunity to defend their meet mark in finals as they were disqualified in prelims. Wingate earned lane 4 for tonight’s final with a 3:41.08 combined effort from juniors Viktoriya Arkhipova (54.84) and Jessika Weiss (1:02.27), and seniors Armony Dumur (53.07) and Ana Fish (50.90). Queens set themselves up for an excellent battle with Wingate in finals, going 3:41.50 in the morning session to qualify second. Delta State was third in 3:44.21.

Defending champion Queens took the top spot in prelims with 3:10.14 from Zack Phelps (47.07), Rostyslav Fedyna (52.63), Dreesens (47.00), and Ben Mayes (43.44). Florida Southern (3:10.69) and Nova S’eastern (3:11.47) were second and third through to finals.
