Women’s 100-yard Freestyle
- NCAA DII: 48.92 3/14/2015 Patri Castro Ortega, Queens (NC)
Drury junior Wen Xu, 2016 champion and current NCAA Division II record-holder in the 50 free, posted the top time in the women’s 100 free going 49.13 in prelims. Queens senior Patri Castro Ortega, who won this event last year with a Division II record time of 48.92, swam to a second-place 49.57. Carson-Newman sophomore Margaret Stansberry came in third with 50.23.
Queens put three in the A final, which gives some inkling as to how their relay will fare tonight. In addition to Castro Ortega, the Royals will have freshmen Kyrie Dobson (50.33) and Josephine Lorda (50.85) chasing the 100 free title tonight.
The rest of the championship final will consist of UCSD senior Colleen Daley (50.50), Truman State sophomore Nicole Sisson (50.74), and Florida Southern senior Kelsey Gouge (50.82).

Men’s 100-yard Freestyle

Defending champion Thiago Sickert of Nova Southeastern knocked 8/10 off his seed time and qualified as the only sub-43 in the field with 42.98. Last year the junior won this event with 43.18. Delta State freshman Mattia Schirru improved 4/10 to qualify second with 43.11. Top-seeded Dion Dreesens of Queens went 43.23 for the third spot in tonight’s final.
Saint Leo senior Matheus Assis, 11th in this event last year, improved his seed by 6/10 for the fourth qualifying time of 43.50. Drury junior Daniel Rzadkowski, runner-up to Lindenwood sophomore Serghei Golban in the 50, qualified in 43.57, justs ahead of Golban’s 43.68. Tampa junior Martin Hammer, fourth in the 50 on Day One, qualified in 43.77. Ben Mayes of Queens, eighth in the 50, put up the eighth-fastest morning time with 43.87.

Women’s 200-yard Backstroke

Viktoriya Arkhipova, 2016 runner-up in the 100 back, led the field with 1:57.28 over defending champion and current NCAA record-holder Caroline Arakelian of Queens (1:58.38). NMU freshman Savanna Saunder dropped 7/10 to qualify third in 1:58.39.
Colorado junior Mary Saiz, sixth in the 100 back final last night, came through with 1:58.76 for the fourth spot in the 200 final. UCSD sophomore Julia Toronczak went 1:59.70, just ahead of Queens’ Hannah Peiffer (1:59.88). The remaining two lanes of tonight’s final will be filled by Kierstin Page of Delta State (2:00.04) and Findlay’s Meri Cizmar (2:00.35).

Men’s 200-yard Backstroke

Queens seniors Zack Phelps and Ben Taylor stunned with big drops to make the championship final of the 200 back, going 1:42.29 and 1:45.63, respectively, for first and fourth. 2015 consolation winner Johsua Hanson of Cal Baptist qualified second in 1:45.25, while UCSD senior Michael Cohn, fourth in this final last year, was third in prelims with 1:45.40.
Florida Southern junior Marco Palacios went 1:45.93 to take the fifth spot in tonight’s final ahead of Indy freshman Rodrigo Codo Berti (1:45.97). Both Grand Valley senior Gianni Ferrero (1:46.43) and Lindenwood junior Felix Eigel (1:46.56) dropped a couple of seconds to make lanes 1 and 8 of the championship final.

Women’s 200-yard Breaststroke

It will be a tight field in the women’s 200 breast tonight. Queens senior Brittney Phelan went a best-by-1 2:13.97 to lead the qualifiers, while UCSD junior Jaimie Bryan dropped almost 3 and came in second with 2:14.13. Defending champion and current NCAA record-holder Rebecca Matthews of Lynn posted the third time with 2:14.44, just ahead of UCSD freshman Lily Maxfield (2:14.71).
Delta State junior Melanie Tombers earned the fifth spot in the A final with 2:15.01, an improvement of 1.5 seconds over her seed time. Fresno Pacific sophomore Daria Belova went 2:15.29 for sixth. She was followed by West Florida senior Paulina Szydlo (2:15.54) and California University of Pennsylvania junior Jade Arganbright (2:16.10).

Men’s 200-yard Breaststroke

Fresno Pacific’s Maksim Shcherbakov marked his team’s first NCAA championship meet with a field-leading swim in the men’s 200 breast, clocking a 1:55.25 for a full second improvement over his seed time. Delta State sophomore Alexander Peach was second through to finals in 1:55.99, just ahead of defending champion and NCAA DII record-holder, Nova Southeastern sophomore Anton Lobanov (1:56.37). Lobanov won the 100 breast on Day Three, while Peach took silver and Shcherbakov, bronze.
The rest of the A final will consist of Missouri S&T junior Miguel Chavez (1:57.04), Luis Jasso of Florida Southern (1:57.26), Delta State junior Matteo Fraschi (1:57.85), Lindenwood senior Mateusz Pacholczyk (1:58.26), and West Chester junior Michael Oliver (1:58.98).

Castro Ortega (49.77), Dobson (50.06), Lorda (50.54), and Shelly Prayson (51.05) took the top spot for tonight’s final, qualifying in 3:21.42. Wingate’s Armony Dumur, Ana Fish, Maria Madsen and Sofia Petrenko combined for 3:22.95, just ahead of San Diego (3:23.40).

Men’s 400-yard Freestyle Relay

Tampa led the way by 2/10 in the prelims of the 400 free relay with Martin Hammer (44.00), Jordan Augier (43.37), Khalid Aldaboos (44.19), and Jeremy Parker (42.87) combining for 2:54.43. Queens went 2:54.62 with Dreesens, Phelps, Ben Taylor, and Mayes. Florida Southern (Jesus Marin, Marco Palacios, Edson Lima, and Diego Gimenez) earned the right to lane 3 in tonight’s final.
