The Stanford Cardinal swept the top 3 in a thrilling 400 IM final on night 2 of the 2016 Ohio State Invitational. IM powerhouse Ella Eastin and Olympic champion Katie Ledecky went head to head, finishing within 3 tenths of each other. Ledecky came home like a train with a 52.2 freestyle split, but Eastin held on for the in in 4:00.36 to Ledecky’s 4:00.65. Behind them, freshman Allie Szekely completed the Cardinal sweep in 4:05.63.
Ledecky also swam the 200 free tonight, where she went head-to-head with fellow Olympic champ and Stanford teammate Simone Manuel. Both swimmers were under the former Pool Record, but it was Manuel taking the win after blasting a 1:41.90. Ledecky followed closely for 2nd in 1:42.16.
Another Stanford All-American, Janet Hu, pulled off an impressive double, finishing in the top 2 of both races. First, she won the 100 fly in 51.05 to outpace Ohio State’s Zhesi Li (51.57). She then swam the 100 back, placing 2nd in a speedy 51.01. Winning the 100 back was her teammate Ally Howe, who blasted a 50.91 for 1st place.
On the men’s side, Ohio State’s Matt McHugh swam an identical double to Hu’s, finishing in the top 2 of both races as well. McHugh, a Big Ten champion, first won the men’s 100 fly with the only sub-47 with his winning time of 46.78. He then fell just short to Penn State’s Shane Ryan in the 100 back, finishing in 46.71 for 2nd behind Ryan’s 46.48.

The 200 SCY is by definition 20 yards shorter than the 200m LCM and has two more turns, both factors that favor Manuel who is the 100m olympic champion.
huh?
Just under 19 yards and four turns more?
The major factor isn’t the difference in number of turns but the difference in number of strokes made. In SCM a swimmer makes about 30% (!) less number of strokes compare to LCM. In yards the difference will be even more impressive. Arm muscles are the smallest ones and get tired fast. I agree that swimmers like Missy Franklin or Simone Manuel benefit more than long or middle distance swimmers when moving to SCY.
The top 3 4IMers….you mean like UGA has already on the men’s side?!?
I think Licon will definitely be top 3 in March.
Well depends how he recovers from whatever his injury thing is right now, and he might not even swim the 400 IM. I don’t know what he’ll do, but 100 breast is an option since it’s a relatively “weak” event, and 400 IM is kind of stacked.
I bet Ledecky was actually tired for once last night after that session
I think this is the first time Ledecky has lost in… a long time. Not her best events, but still. Maybe she’s looking to add 400 IM, cuz if she works on it she could be crazy fast. 200 free at NCAAs will be super fun to watch.
Haha, that 400 IM must have been fun to watch. 10 more yards and Eastin was eaten. Good job by her to hold on. KL without specific IM training already in 4.00. With a last 100 in 52.22.
Another great battle in the 200 free with Simone Manuel winning thanks to her better sprint abilities and with less fatigue. Of course KL had swum a grueling 400 IM just before so it shows she’s human. And I repeat that the 200 free in yards is well different. It requires other strong points than in long course. In the big pool, when the 2 girls are at their best, KL is around 3/3.5 s ahead of Simone. In yards it… Read more »
Both were great races to watch! Ledecky’s last turn in the 4IM was incredible and bringing it home it looked like Eastin was in slow motion.
Simone knew exactly the kind of race she needed in order to win and swam it to perfection.
I don’t think that the negative splits is the way to swim 200 free to perfection.
4:00.6 makes Ledecky #9 all-time at 400IM Y. Only seven swimmers were under 4 min and all these times were made in Feb-Mar but not in mid-season. In 40 minutes after that she swims 200 free with very steep NEGATIVE splits. I think she is playing with this 200 free by far before making a sensational kill. Whenever she seriously competed at 200LCM it was always sprint all the way where last 50 were the slowest one. I think that the difference between Ledecky and Manuel is same 3sec in yards as well. It is good that she has two great teammates that can challenge her at practice bouth at 200 free and 400IM
Anyone have 800 Free Relay splits for Stanford?
I posted it on the article about the ledecky vs Manuel 200 free
25.33 last 50 split for Ledecky! Great job by Eastin to hold her off.
