2016 Short Course World Championships: Day 4 Finals Preview

2016 SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Swimmers are gearing up for day 3 finals of the 2016 FINA Short Course World Championships in Windsor, Canada. Tonight, we’ll crown the world champions in the women’s 50 fly, 100 IM, and 400 free, as well as the men’s 200 free relay, 100 IM, 50 free,  50 back, and 800 free relay. We’ll also see semifinals of the 50 fly for the men, along with the 50 back and 100 breast for the women. Read on for a preview of some of the top races to watch.

KELSI WORRELL CHASES 50 FLY GOLD

Team USA’s Kelsi Worrell broke the American Record in 50 fly prelims, becoming the first American woman to swim sub-25 in the event. That was her 2nd American Record of the week, but she’s still looking to win her first individual gold. On Wednesday night, Worrell broke the 200 fly American Record on the way to a silver medal. To win gold tonight, she’ll have to hold off Danish sprint star Jeanette Ottesen.

VLAD MOROZOV DOUBLES UP

World Record holder Vlad Morozov cruised his way into the men’s 100 IM final. Tonight, he’ll look to break his own record while racing for gold. Morozov will be swimming in lane 6 after taking 4th in semis. He’ll be up against top seed Daiya Seto, a Japanese Olympic medalist. Seto’s teammate Shinri Shioura and Team USA’s Michael Andrew will also be in the medal hunt.

Shortly after the 100 IM, he’ll return to the pool for the 50 free. He’s the top qualifier in that race, but he’ll have his hands full against Lithuania’s Simonas Bilis, who was just a tenth behind in semifinals.

ALIA ATKINSON, LILLY KING RACE IN 100 BREAST SEMIS

Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson and the USA’s Lilly King are slated to swim side-by-side in semifinal 2 of the women’s 100 breast. Atkinson is the World Record holder in this race after tying Ruta Meilutyte’s 1:02.36 mark at 2014 Short Course Worlds. She tied the World Record once again during the 2016 FINA World Cup Series. King, on the other hand, is the reigning Olympic champ in the long course version of this race, so it should be a fun one to watch tonight.
