Women’s 200 Meter Backstroke – Final

Lucie Nordmann of Magnolia Aquatic Club took 1.46 seconds off her seed time to win the championship final of women’s 200 backstroke in 2:09.40 and move to #5 on the all-time list for 15-16 girls (behind only Missy Franklin, Elizabeth Beisel, Elizabeth Pelton, and Janie Wagstaff). Tide Swimming’s Callie Dickinson had a nice finish, passing Riptide Swim Team’s Regan Smith over the final 50 meters to take second place in 2:11.71. Smith placed third with 2:11.96, just a touch off her personal best from the morning heats.

Quest Swimming’s Clark Beach, who came into the meet with a seed time of 2:02.00, dropped another half-second from his morning swim and won the men’s 200 back with his first sub-2:00 time, 1:59.56. top-seeded Josh Artmann of Austin Swim Club was runner-up with a personal-best 2:00.35; he dropped 9/10 off his previous best. Beach is now #15 on the all-time list for 17-18 boys, while Artmann ranks #26.

Alessandro Boratto of Upper Dublin Aquatic Club came in third, just out-touching Team Greenville’s Tal Davis, 2:01.79 to 2:01.97. Davis moved to #82 all-time for 17-18s, while Boratto is the 22nd-fastest 15-16 of all time.

Mako Swim Team 15-year-old Anya Goeders flew off the start and turned first at the 50 wall, in 26.9. She was followed closely by Brea Aquatics’ Kenisha Liu. Neither was able to keep up the pace, though, and three swimmers who came home in sub-29s all moved up on the early leaders. Morgan Tankersley of Greater Tampa Swimming Association got the win in 56.06, with a very narrow .02 margin over Morgan Scott of Central Bucks Swim Team. Miki Dahlke of North Bay Aquatics was just behind them, hitting the wall at 56.14 to tie for third with Liu.

In an unexpected turn of events, 16-year-old Drew Kibler of Carmel Swim Club gave top-seeded Michael Andrew of Race Pace Club a run for his money in the championship final of the men’s 100 free. Kibler took it out quickly, turning at 24.09 to Andrew’s 24.21. Andrew brought it home in a 25.88, though, crushing Kibler’s hopes for an upset and winning in 50.09. Kibler took .22 off his personal best, though, and finished second with the fifth-fastest time in history for 15-16 boys. Cody Bybee of Dayton Raiders and Enfinity Aquatics’ Levent Bathory had strong back halves as well; they made it to the wall third and fourth, respectively with 50.96 and 51.04. They move to #22 and #28 on the all-time list for 15-16 boys.

Sandpipers of Nevada’s Hailey Houck sprinted out front with a 1:04 butterfly leg but it only took a couple of cycles of backstroke before Carmel Swim Club’s Sammie Burchill had taken the lead. Burchill was up by a full second over top-seeded Lauren Edelman of Fishers Area Swim Team, but the latter charge to the lead about halfway through the first 50 of breaststroke. Edelman never gave up the lead afterwards and finished with 4:47.78. Burchill was runner-up in 4:50.76. Houck held off fast-charging Kenisha Liu for third.

Like his teammate Houck before him, Carter Grimes tore through the butterfly leg to take the early lead. He lost ground on the backstroke but held a narrow lead heading into breast. Grimes slipped to fourth during the breaststroke as Eric Knowles of Dayton Raiders, Glenview Titan’s Sam Iida, and Ridgefield Aquatic Club’s Kieran Smith moved to the front. As the trio sprinted home it was anyone’s race. Knowles got his hand to the wall first and clocked a personal-best 4:23.05. Smith edged Iida by .07, coming in second with 4:23.25. Tal Davis of Team Greenville also slipped past Grimes, finishing 9/10 behind Iida with 4:24.43.

Women’s 4×100 Meter Free Relay

Carmel Swim Club dominated the field in the 400 free relay. Trude Rothrock (57.30), Emma Nordin (56.83), Kelly Pash (56.46), and Sammie Burchill (56.53) combined for a winning 3:47.12 to win their heat and come out on top overall. Austin Swim Club’s Ella Collins, Diana Dunn, Dakota Luther, and Kendall Shields went 3:50.63 for second. Aquajets Swim Team came in third overall with 3:50.87 from Raime Jones, Carly Quast, Rachel Wittmer, and Madison Preiss.

Men’s 4×100 Meter Free Relay

  • Meet: 3:24.62 7/31/2014 Indiana University Swim Team (I Finnerty, M Irwin, B Colonis, B Pieroni)

Dayton Riders won an exciting heat 2 of the men’s 400 free relay but it was Aquajets Swim Team, who prevailed in heat 1 with 3:26.76, who won the event overall. Jordan Greenberg (52.67), Griffin Back (51.87), Jack Dahlgren (52.35), and Sam Schilling (49.87) contributed to the Aquajets victory. Dayton Raiders’ Cody Bybee, Eric Knowles, Evan Stapp, and Tommy Cope combined for 3:27.25 for runner-up. Third place went to Memphis Thunder’s Christian Berry, Henry Keel, Jack McCaghren, and Josh Walsh, who finished with 3:29.64.

Fourth through tenth places were all in the 3:30s, ranging from 3:30.07 to 3:30.98.
