Women’s 200 Meter Freestyle – Prelims

The 200 free final was one of those great finals where everyone goes faster in the evening than they’d been in prelims. Greater Tampa’s Morgan Tankersley went after it right away, jumped to an early lead from the first turn. She was the only one in the heat to flip in under 59 seconds at the 100 wall. Tankersley also had the best back half, and she touched well in front in 1:59.54. It was her best time by nearly 2 seconds, and moved her to #31 on the all-time list for 17-18 girls.

Finishing second was Miranda Heckman of Pleasanton Seahawks. Improving her personal-best by .65, she moved to #42 (tied with Olympian Penny Oleksiak) all-time for 15-16 girls, with another year left to improve her position. Taylor Ault of La Mirada Armada, who won the 800 on Day 1, also notched a best time, finishing third with 2:00.94. That puts her at #73 in history for 17-18s. Regan Smith of Riptide finished 8th, but at 2:01.98 she improved 1.4 seconds and jumped to #16 on the 13-14 top 100.

The championship final of the men’s 200 free was another heat of all improved times from prelims. Carmel Swim Club’s Drew Kibler was seventh at the 150 wall, but he came home in an unbelievable 26.4 to pick everyone off, one by one. Kibler is one of only five 15-16 boys to have gone under 1:50 in history with his 1:49.93 winning time.

Fynn Minuth of University of South Carolina was runner-up in 1:50.92, just out-touching Dayton Raiders’ Cody Bybee (1:51.15).

Zoe Bartel of Fort Collins Area Swim Team came into the meet seeded number one by 3.4 seconds with 2:28.17. She improved on that by .13 in prelims, and was only off the meet record by 1.7 seconds. Bartel went for it in finals, getting out early and making the 100 turn at 1:10.62. She was 1:49 at the 150, but that’s all she had in the tank. Runner-up Rachel Ramey of Texas Ford Aquatics came tried to chase her down over the final 50; she outsplit Bartel by 6/10 but she’d been too far behind at the 150 to make up the difference. Bartel won with 2:28.56; Ramey went 2:30.43 for second. Olivia Calegan of Greater Nebraska took another 2.3 seconds off her time, improving by an astounding total of 7 seconds for the day to finish in third place with 2:33.09.

Michael Andrew of Race Pace Club was out quickly, up by a body length already at the 100 wall. He ran into competition over the second half of the race. Devon Nowicki actually out-touched him in the end but was disqualified. Andrew got the win with 2:13.90, his best time by 2.7 seconds. AJ Bornstein of Ridgefield Aquatic Club came in second in 2:14.60. He improved his time by 2.2 seconds and moved to #4 on the all-time list for 15-16 boys Jake Foster of Mason Manta Rays inched up from 21st to 19th on that same list, clocking a 2:16.78 for third.

Women’s 100 Meter Backstroke – Prelims

After moving up from 5th to 4th on the 15-16 all-time top 100 after her prelims swim, Lucie Nordmann of Magnolia Aquatic Club improved by another .15 to make that fourth position even faster, with her 1:00.16 win in the women’s 100 back final. Riptide’s Regan Smith, who had pushed Nordmann from the outset, finished second just .34 back with 1:00.50. Grace Ariola of Waves Bloomington was almost a body length behind the pair, touching third with 1:01.60.

Race Pace Club’s Michael Andrew pulled off his double, winning the 100 back just after the 200 breast. Upper Dublin Aquatic Club’s Alessandro Boratto made an effort to go after it, leading at the 50 wall by 2/10. But Andrew came home a bit quicker and got the touch, 55.46 to 55.51. Boratto popped up from 13th to 6th on the 15-16 all-time list with his .45 improvement. Clark Beach of Quest Swimming broke 56 for the first time, finishing third with 55.96. That ranks him #37 in history for 17-18 boys.

Women’s 4×200 Meter Free Relay

Sammie Burchill (2:04.76), Emma Nordin (2:02.14), Trude Rothrock (2:03.68), and Kelly Pash (2:02.09) of Carmel Swim Club combined to trounce the competition with 8:12.67 for the national title. Austin Swim Club’s Ella Collins, Dakota Luther, Diana Dunn, and Kendall Shields were runners-up in 8:17.37. Magnolia Aquatic Club’ Joy Field, Monica Gumina, Emily Reese and Lucie Nordmann took third with 8:20.17.
