Next to her in lane 5 tonight will be Riptide’s Regan Smith, who dropped time to qualify for yet another A final. Smith is #3 on the all-time list for 13-14 girls, and has only .36 to drop in order to break Missy Franklin’s National Age Group Record in the event. Grace Ariola of Waves Bloomington will be on the other side of Nordmann, having qualified third in 1:01.83. This could be the race of the night in Minneapolis with those three in the middle lanes.

Michael Andrew posted the top time in his second event, the 100 back, going 55.60 to land within 9/10 of his seed time. Andrew went under 55 five times last August; the fastest he has been in 2016 is 55.28. Alessandro Boratto of Upper Dublin Aquatic Club had the number 2 time of the morning; he went 56.01, only .05 off his best. Quest Swimming’s Clark Beach continued his outstanding performances with a best-by-6/10-56.06 to qualify third. Westport/Weston Family Y Swim Team’s John Whiteside moved from #17 seed on the psych sheet to take the last spot in the A final with 57.21, his best time by 8/10.
With one exception, the entire B final will consist of backstrokers whose morning swims were faster than their seed times. It will be a tight final, separated by only 7/10. Clark’s twin, Ethan Beach of Quest Swimming, will be in lane 4 with a personal-best 57.42. Another set of twins, Patrick Gridley and Ryan Gridley of New Trier Swim Club, had nice drops and will contest the B final together. Ryan and Cody Bybee of Dayton Raiders both went 58.15 in prelims to tie for 16th, but Bybee scratched the back final to concentrate on the 200 free.

Smith actually broke Missy Franklin’s 100 Back record at US Open last week. Swims database shows she went 1:00.26. She’s had great swims this week with many All-Time 13-14 Top 20 or better times. Tough double tonight though (similar to Tuesday’s 200 Back/100 Free) so going low in the 100 Back after the 200 Free will be difficult. Nordmann looks great and is well-rested with fewer events here. I think Nordmann will challenge the sub-minute mark. Smith looks good for a high-point top 1/2/3 at only 14 years old. Bright future for both girls.
