Women’s 200 Meter IM – Prelims

Australia’s Sian Whittaker kicked off the heats of women’s 200 IMs with a dominant 2:16.39, taking nearly 3.4 seconds off her seed time and winning by over three body lengths. Fiona Donnelly was second in the heat with 2:20.23.

The first of the circle-seeded heats was evenly matched, as half the field touched the wall nearly simultaneously. NC State’s Hannah Moore got the win from the outside lane with 2:17.37; she was followed by Aggie Swim Club’s Lisa Bratton in 2:17.62 and Marlins of Raleigh’s Julia Poole with 2:17.77.

Aggie Swim Club’s Bethany Galat notched a 2:15.89 to win heat 3 and take over the lead of finals qualifiers thus far. Mia Nonnenberg of Alabama went 2:17.86 to top Dannie Dilsaver of Greater Nebraska (2:18.01).

Madisyn Cox won the final heat of women’s 200 IM with 2:16.08; she was followed closely by Miranda Tucker (2:16.93) and Aberdeen Swim Club’s Hannah Kastigar (2:17.61).

Men’s 200 Meter IM – Prelims

Mark Szaranek of Gator Swim Club set the pace in the first heat of men’s 200 IMs with a strong morning swim of 2:00.54. Vini Lanza of Indiana University took second in the heat with 2:05.16. Irish Aquatics’ Tommy Anderson went 2:07.16 for third.

The following heat was close through the 150, when Robert Owen of H2Okie Aquatics broke free and finished with 2:03.25. Tom Peribonio of Gamecock Aquatics also had a strong finish, edging Race Pace Club’s Michael Andrew, 2:04.04 to 2:04.13, for second place.

Max Williamson of Stanford Swimming led throughout heat 3, and came to the wall first in 2:02.46. Alexander Lebed was runner-up with 2:03.82, while Edina Swim Club’s Jack Lindell grabbed third in 2:06.85.

Women’s 50 Meter Freestyle – Prelims

With only 3 heats of women’s 50s, everyone was assured a spot in finals, even the bonus entrants. Heat 1 went to Chase Kinney of Wisconsin with 25.54. She was followed by Casey Fanz of Poseidon in 25.71 and Eva Merrell of Aquazot Swim Club in 26.17.

Australia’s Holly Barratt claimed heat 2 in 25.48 ahead of Wisconsin’s Marissa Berg (25.86) and Hadley Lindsay of Australia (26.06).

Shayna Jack of Australia closed out the women’s 50 free heats with a 25.25 victory. Cardinal Aquatics’ Mallory Comerford finished in 25.68; Club Wolverine’s Ali Deloof was third in 26.00.

Men’s 50 Meter Freestyle– Prelims

Australia’s Tommy Sucipto led the field in the first heat of men’s 50 free with 23.23. Youssef Hammoud of Yellow Jackets/Georgia Tech followed in 23.61, while Luke Kaliszak of University of Alabama Swim Club touched third with 23.80.

The first of the circle-seeded heats went to University of Minnesota’s Bowen Becker, whose 22.37 led the way by nearly a body length. Kyle Robrock from University of Denver Hilltoppers touched second in 23.08, just in front of University of Alabama’s Alex Gray (23.32).

Michael Andrew of Race Pace Club won heat 3 in 22.68. Grand Canyon Aquatics’ Mazen El Kamash out-touched Wisconsin Aquatics’ Cannon Clifton, 23.01 to 23.06, for second.

Australia’s William Stockwell clocked a 22.40 to win the final heat of men’s 50s over Erik Risolvato (22.72) and Ireland’s Curtis Coulter (22.91).

Women’s 1500 Meter Freestyle (slower heats)

  • American: 15:25.48 8/4/2015 Katie Ledecky
  • U.S. Open Meet: 15:52.10 3/26/1988 Janet Evans, Fullerton

Club Wolverine’s Rose Bi, who has had a spectacular meet, blew away the field in the first heat of women’s 1500s. She dropped just over 8/10 from her previous best time and won in 16:27.48. Marlins of Raleigh’s Madison Homovich seemingly sprinted the second half of her race. She closed Bi’s half-pool length lead at the halfway mark, to a two body-length lead at the 1400. But just when it looked like Homovich would snatch the victory away, Bi put her legs into it and finished with a strong final 100. Homovich touched at 16:30.37, her best time by 2.7 seconds.

 

Men’s 800 Meter Freestyle (slower heats)

  • American: 7:43.60 7/31/2013 Michael McBroom
  • U.S. Open Meet: 7:47.27 8/8/2009 Chad La Tourette

Pitchfork Aquatics’ Juan Tolosa picked up a best time with his heat 1 win in the men’s 800 free, going 8:11.96 ahead of Sandpipers of Nevada’s Carter Grimes (8:17.90).

Heat 2 was all Liam Egan of Crimson Aquatics. He led the entire way and finished with a personal-best 8:01.48. Ben Lawless just out-touched Andrew Brady, 8:06.71 to 8:06.89, for second in the heat, while Jack Collins eked out a 4th place over Trey Hubbuch, 8:13.10 to 8:13.35.
