Michael Andrew is not a great swimmer because at the age of 17 he has not broken WR or won Olympics/World Championships medal. He has not even qualified for Olympics/World Championships.

He’s a great swimmer. You don’t finish 4th at US trials under the minute at 17, especially on the men’s side, if you are not much talented.
But he’s not a star. At least not yet. And all the hype for several years was a little bit irritating about someone who still had everything to prove at the best level. MP was world record holder, world champion and olympic finalist at that age. Peirsol had qualified for Sydney 2000. Thorpe, Gyurta, Hagino….
MA continues to improve slowly but surely. 2016 has just come a little bit too early. There’s a very good chance that 2017 will be the year of his first US team in the senior ranks… Read more »

A factor that may play into why MA hasn’t done all the things Thorpe, Peirsol, Phelps, etc. had done at his age is the increase of post grad pro swimmers. It’s become more common for swimmers to continue swimming for multiple Olympic cycles after they graduate from college swimming. If you were an NCAA champion, it used to be good enough to medal, or at least qualify, at the Olympics. Now we see a mix of the best college stars with the older, experienced swimmers.

I agree with you about the increase of post grad pro swimmers. However, by comparing the times Thorpe, Peirsol, Phelps, etc. went at his age, he is still not close to those guys. But I don’t want to take away that he is very talented, just at his own level.

Go back to your cave troll (or if you are just being sarcastic, ha ha). Michael Andrew is an awesome young swimmer.

Michael Phelps is a great swimmer. I see similarities between Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, but in a reverse order. Jack Nicklaus was seen as the best golfer to ever play the game until a child prodigy like Tiger Woods came along, but while people appreciated Tiger’s ability, he was not liked amongst his peers or competitors. Jack Nicklaus always appreciated being challenged by other golfers, but he never showed his temper on the course, and was gracious in defeat, even as the galleries cheered for Arnold and hissed at him.

As MP came up the ranks, I believe Bowman believed Phelps could be great in the sport, but being great doesn’t necessarily mean you or like or revered. Ever… Read more »

Psych sheet says Michael Andrew is with Race Pace Club. I thought it was Indie swim? Shouldn’t he have to be unatt if switching clubs? Or is it same club with new/different name?

MA predictions. If he swims all these then the times will be slow.

As much as that sucks probably more accurate than it should be so few swimmers it’s smaller than the Montana HS state meet…
