2017 ACC Women’s Championships Preliminary Psych Sheets Out

The psych sheets for the 2017 ACC Women’s Championships have been released in preparation for the meet that begins February 13th and runs through the 16th at the Georgia Tech Aquatics Center in Atlanta.

While generally not as badly over-entered as the SEC Psych Sheets (released on Tuesday) are, the ACC still allows teams to put swimmers in more than their allotted 3 events prior to the meet’s start, so long as they’re under the maximum at the meet itself.

Virginia’s Leah Smith, for example, will defend her titles in the 500 and 1650 freestyles, while trying to take one back from Louisville’s Mallory Comerford, who beat Smith last season and is seeded first again this year. Whether those two will have just 1, or 2, individual showdowns is up in the air – Comerford is entered in the 50, 100, 200, and 500 freestyles. Her best two events, the 100 and 200, seem like sure-things; she’s seeded 2nd in the 500 and 6th in the 50 as well.

The psych sheets ultimately didn’t reveal many interesting secrets about the meet. UNC’s Hellen Moffitt, for example, has national scoring potential in at least 4 races, and she’s entered in 5 events (50 free, 100 fly, 200 fly, 100 back, 200 back) in the preliminary sheets.

The only mildly interesting tidbit we were able to glean was that Virginia’s Kaitlyn Jones will stick to her 200 fly, 200 IM, 400 IM schedule. That means she’s eschewing any possibility of swimming the 200 free (where she would’ve been tied as the 3rd seed) or 100 fly (where she would’ve been the top seed).

Aside from that, and Leah Smith not taking on the 400 IM, the top 8 swimmers from the ACC regular season are preliminarily entered in those events.

So instead of just spewing out at the mouth I did the numbers of the seeds through the meet between UVA and NC State, not accounting for relays. It’s much closer than you all think, you have to equate for nc state putting their swimmers in multiple events making it seem as though they are everywhere but after scoring through all 3 days its UVA 816 to NC State’s 806. It will come down to who has tapered the best for the championship. One thing to notice UVA has a lot of top seeds/ high seeds throughout the meet. They have the most to fall from projections whereas NC State has plenty of places to move up. Regardless of my… Read more »

Couldn’t agree with you anymore. UVA’s can only move down from the psych sheet. Wouldn’t surprise me if they choked like the Falcons did in the Super Bowl LOL. Nonetheless, meets aren’t won on paper. UVA were heavy favorites in their duel meet with NC State and look how that turned out. I predict NC State trounce UVA. #STATEment

Easy enough to pre-score the meet. Last year ACC’s scored to 24.

It’s a pre-score and some teams will scratch down, so it’s loose. Presuming though that (except for Moffitt) swimmers plan on swimming one event per day and will swim their highest seeded event, it looks like this (without the three diving events):

UVA 843i + 302r = 1145
NCSU 733i + 276r = 1009
Louisville 652i + 274r = 926
UNC 581i + 260r = 841

Duke, Virginia Tech, and FSU should be closely bunched but well behind UNC.

Team health is obviously very important; Moroney sets UVA back about 60 points (presuming someone else would be cut from the squad.

UVA looks solid in every event except for the backstrokes. I think they take a title due to their depth. As an interesting sidenote, I took a look at their Class of 2017 recruits and man, they have loaded up on backstroke talent for next year. They signed 5 athletes with 100 backstroke times within .04 of one another–Gmelich, 53.71, Mcguire, 53.70, Madden, 53.71, Early, 53.74, and Richter, 53.70. That’s uncanny. They also recruited 5 women under 1:56.0 in the 200 backstroke- Seiberlich, 1:55.1, Madden, 1:55.0, Macguire, 1:56.0, Early, 1:54.2, and Richter, 1:54.8. That’s one heck of a backstroke training group headed to Charlottesville in the fall. Replacing Smith overall will be difficult, but after next year, backstroke will no… Read more »

That’s the reason I don’t think they repeat. Not a single scorer in 200 bk….freestyle depth not as strong as advertised.

1-3 very close between NC State, UVA, Louisville. UNC also has three very good girls and best diver at the meet but no depth outside that so still think 4th

Yeah, but. . .

A lot better than UVA does in both backstrokes….

While you’re right that UVA doesn’t have anyone even entered in the 200 back, they have 5 seeded in the top 16 in the 200 breast, and 4 of the top 16 seeds in 3 other events. UVA has 6 individual events in which they are the top seed as well as 2 relays. NC State has no individual top seeds and only one relay top seed. I counted it up and UVA has 33 individual swims seeded in the top 16 right now to NC State’s 34, which includes 6 events from Hannah Moore, so really 31 (I didn’t notice any overentries from UVA but didn’t meticulously check). It’s going to be a close one and could easily come… Read more »

Alright mr facts check, nice analysis!

Here are some #alternativefacts for you 🙂
– UVA typically majority of their best times in mid season invite. So I don’t expect them to go much faster or faster than their seed times.
– UNC, Louisville and NCSU typically dropped more than anyone in the field.
– Based of the psych sheet from last year, NCSU was only predicted to finish 5th and they end up 2nd

Fair points–I agree that UVA has had some trouble improving on mid-season times in previous years. It will be a close and exciting meet!

UVA women know how to WIN! This team is going for their 10th title in a row… Do you really think they are going to lose this one?

Wolfpack women have been ON FIRE… I didn’t think they have a shot until the dual meet against UVA.

Get your popcorn ready! This is going to be FUN! GOOD LUCK LADIES!
