2017 Big 12 Championships: Day 3 Prelims Live Recap

2017 BIG 12 SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2017 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships continue this morning in Austin, Texas. Swimmers will compete in the preliminary heats of the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, and 100 back. Texas’ Madisyn Cox is one of the headliners on the women’s side, as she chases the Big 12 Conference Record in the 400 IM. Teammate Joanna Evans will be seeking her 2nd victory of the meet in the 200 free.

On the men’s side Texas teammates Jack Conger and Joseph Schooling will go head-to-head in the 100 fly, while Townley Haas and Clark Smith will have another showdown in the 200 free. Big 12 Conference Record holder Will Licon and Big 12 Meet Record holder Jonathan Roberts will square off in the 400 IM.

Texas freshman Lauren Case led the way through prelims with a quick 52.13. She’ll be joined in the final by teammates Remedy Rule and Brynne Wong. West Virginia also got 3 into the final, led by freshman standout Morgan Bullock in 4th place. Julia Miranda was 5th, while teammate Amelie Currat took 8th.

Texas’ Joseph Schooling cruised to the top spot with a quick 45.44, followed by teammates Will Glass and Jack Conger with a pair of 46-lows. The Longhorns took 6 of the 8 top spots, but TCU got 2 in with Garrett Hills (6th) and John Smith (8th).

Madisyn Cox cruised to a 4:10.42 to lead prelims, topping the field by over 6 seconds. Teammates Maggie D’Innocenzo and Madison Straight both cleared 4:20 for 2nd and 4th respectively. Also in the medal hunt tonight will be Iowa State’s Haley Ruegmer, who qualified 3rd.

MEN’S 400 IM

Texas’ Will Licon and Sam Stewart were narrowly separated with a pair of 3:44s this morning. Stewart’s 3:44.42 was a new personal best by almost a second. Defending champ Jonathan Roberts touched 3rd in 3:49.11, while the Longhorns’ Mason Tenney was also sub-3:50 in 3:49.93.

Texas’ Joanna Evans and Quinn Carrozza will battle in the middle of the pool again tonight. This time, Carrozza led the way through prelims, while Evans touched 2nd. Teammate Nora McCullagh and Kansas’ Jenny Nusbaum tied for 3rd, with Iowa State’s Keely Soellner also touching in the 1:48-range for 5th seed.

Clark Smith raced to the top spot this morning, edging out teammate PJ Dunne. Just tenths behind were teammates Sam Kline, Townley Haas, and Jeff Newkirk. TCU got a swimmer in with Radu Duican taking 7th.

Texas’ Jordan Surhoff and Devin Newton led prelims with a pair of 1:01s. Their teammate Olivia Anderson came in at 5th behind West Virginia’s Emma Harris and Kansas’ Haley Downey. Iowa State got 2 into the final with Kasey Roberts at 6th and Danica Delaquis at 8th.

West Virginia’s Jake Armstrong will look to snap the Longhorns’ winning streak tonight after taking top seed ahead of Texas’ Imri Ganiel. Behind them, a handful of Texas men qualified in the 54-range for the 3rd through 6th seeds, led by Casey Melzer.

Texas’ Claire Adams came with in 3 tenths of her best time, posting the only aub-52 of the morning. Hundredths behind in 2nd was teammate Tasija Karosas, while Kaitlin Harty swept the top 3 spots for the Longhorns.

Texas’ John Shebat took top seed in 47.12, followed by freshman teammate Josh Artmann (47.63). Also coming in at the 47-range for 3rd seed was West Virginia’s Merwane Elmerini, who will be looking for his 1st medal of the meet after placing 5th in last night’s 50 free final.
